2016 R2 PDF printing issues....

Anonymous
Not applicable

Have been using Adobe Acrobat Pro as my pdf printer for years with no issues.........Now since updating ro R2, having all kinds of issues with pdf's.......

1.  If I've done any editing of anything, the pdf printer just sits there and the progress bar does absolutely nothing.  I am forced to shut down REVIT, Relaunch, reopen Project and start Print reoutine all over again...................Once Pdf pops up for review , the PDF Progress bar consistanly show around 75-80% done, but then nothing..I've waited as long as 15minutes for it to complete.....alas still hangs...........

2. If after completeing one 'print routine in pdf', I try to Immediately start another with different params,  the PDF Progress dialog pops up......then absolutely nothing happens..............have waited as long as 1-hr just to see..nothing...............Have to shut down REVIt, and again relaunch, etc..........

3. Also noticed a new PROCESS runnning now.....Something called "REVIT WORKER.EXE".........wha is this now?????

See attached scrn shot for pdf window...........

I am having the same printing PDF problems.  Tried to use the fix Adobe Acrobat X Pro as someone else suggested but that didn't fix my problem.  In the middle of the print it just stops.   On a deadline to print a job and I'm dead in the water also.

Can not really offer you a solution. No problems with R2 for me yet.

Something you might try to locate/solve the problem.

-Print as Raster Processing instead of Vector Processing.

-What happens when you print from an old project?

-What happens when you print from a new/clean project?

-Printing without images (e.g. logos on sheet).

-Try different settings from the "Adobe Printer Settings".

-Try lower resolution/smaller size (i.e. memory problems).

-Use different PDF Printer (I often use open source PDF Creator).

Try to work locally instead of on/from network.

-Look for updates (Windows. Revit, Adobe)

-Reinstall Adobe

-If problem did not happen until  recently, you could try to go to earlier restore point.

Please mention Revit version, especially when uploading Revit files.

Something you might try to locate/solve the problem.

-Print as Raster Processing instead of Vector Processing......did that......worse

-What happens when you print from an old project?.........same issue..............

-What happens when you print from a new/clean project?.................same

-Printing without images (e.g. logos on sheet)............same...........

-Try different settings from the "Adobe Printer Settings"................same...even tried printing 100 individual sheets rather that combined...stopped after 1st sheet..had to reboot.......

-Try lower resolution/smaller size (i.e. memory problems)....pleanty of ram.not the issue...........same project was printed prior to R2, just as for the past 7 years..no issue...........Install R2 with it's Revit Worker and Revit Accelerator now..........5 hrs prinitng for a 5-min job before......

-Use different PDF Printer (I often use open source PDF Creator).

Try to work locally instead of on/from network............shouldn't have to............no problems before

-Look for updates (Windows. Revit, Adobe)..obviously when I updated Revit the issues started.................

The use of red text clearly indicates understandable frustration...

I know you shouldn't 'need' to do this, but have you tried any other PDF printers to see if they work?  Maybe Cute PDF or PDF995... (I only ask as you don't seem to have responded to that particular suggestion for Louis... )

Yes, I think we all understand your point and that there is a problem, and despite the lack of a formal response from AD I have no doubt they are looking to resolve it, after all it's a fairly fundamental issue not being able to plot drawings to PDF..

All myself and Louis are trying to do it help you get to an interim position that allows you to print until the issue is formally resolved.  But if all you want to do is bitch about it then crack on and I'll leave you to it.

Personally if I were in your situation, annoyed as I would be, I'd be trying a few other of the free PDF printers and logging a support case directly with ADesk (assuming you have a maintenance / subscription contract).

Out of curiousity does the DWF plotter work?

I know you are Keith..........my frustrations are obviously not directed toward any one person(s)............I am logging the issue to Adesk fromally today.........I haven't tried the dwf writer yet.witll do so shortly and let you know.

One of my VERY FEW times I've been very frustrated with Revit as the reult of "improvements" as I've always been able to find a way around them....this just really came at a very bad time............I know better than to do and upgrade in the middle of a project..........but being an Beta Tester and Early AdopterI' wired to getting to the new tools as soon as possible.........

Be in touch soon with update.

It's okay - I get frustrated all the time.  ;o)

Early adoption does have it's downsides sadly....

I have the PDF print working again somewhat. I believe the problem may be related to large-size Revit models. My small jobs are printing OK but I have two larger jobs (+200mb file sizes) that continue to derail when printing to PDF. I have to print the set in three parts. I'm having the same issue after this last update.

Was literally printing to PDF perfectly 20 minutes before I updated. Third party PDF virtual printers seem to be working for me, so I'm not sure where the issue is exactly.

Tried running Revit with Admin privilages, tried uninstalling Acrobat DC, repairing Acrobat DC, and everything else already listed. No luck yet.

Going to send off an email to the Revit support team.

From what I have found the RevitWorker.exe process is used to multithread DWF export:

About Performance When Exporting Multiple Files to DWF

Killing it can lead to a crash/hang in Revit, but I’ve not found anything (so far) indicating it is related to printing.

Also, looking at the release notes for R2, I’m not seeing anything listed related to printing.

I’ve tried reproducing with a simple file (RAC Basic Sample Project.rvt) when printing to the CutePDF printer (a couple times so far), and have not yet encountered the issue.

I’m trying out some larger files (200+ MBs), and printing more sheets, to see if I can reproduce (it’s slow, but hasn’t hung up yet).

There were times when I thought it might be hung up, but I opened up the journal file and found that new entries were being written as the different views were accessed.

Can anyone post a journal file recorded when the issue is encountered (along with when the hang up started and when Revit was forcibly closed)?

It would also be good to check if anyone can reproduce this in the sample project (or other small files) or if as walter indicated the issue only happens for larger files.

So far, it sounds like the issue has been seen with:

Adobe Acrobat Pro

Bluebeam

To work around the behavior, you could try:

  • Different PDF printers (PDF995, CutePDF, Nitro PDF, etc.)
  • Using Print to File for a physical postscript printer (and then using Acrobat Distiller to convert to PDF).
  • Uninstalling Revit, and reinstalling (to remove R2).

Hi Lance,

For sure there are deffinate bugs when printing to PDF.  It does not matter which PDF application.  Here is something you can easly reproduce.  Sometimes we use two views, one placed on to of another (Used as a bacground).  So, try testing where you take one view and put it directly over the other, then print, the view on top will not print to PDF.  Or maybe it does and just reversese the order and hides the view on top.

I have tried this on several machines and different views, all the same result.

Thanks

@Anonymous Are you seeing this issue with printing views on top of each other specifically with R2 (i.e. it started after installing R2)?

Additionally, is it specific to printing to PDF or also shows up when printing to a physical printer (and does it occur when printing using Raster Processing)?

Hi Lance,

Yes, for sure we see this only with the R2 build.

We have only tested it with Vector pringing to pdf.

I have not tested it to a real printer or raster printing, we had to move quick on our project and modifed the sheets so we could get it done.

Any thoughts on what it could be?

@Anonymous I tried placing two views (copy of Level 1 and Level 2 from RAC basic sample project) so that they were overlapping on the same sheet, and printed to PDF, but I am seeing both views (except for the part where one view covers the other).

Are you able to reproduce this behavior in the sample project?

For what it's worth I am having the same problem. While I do know what causes the problem, I don't have a work around. In my case I have a project with matchline and the crop views are of iregular shapes.

I'm using:

Revit 2015

Adobe Acrobat 8 Standard

I’ve previously seen issues with certain PDF producers (including Acrobat) when printing views containing non-rectangular crop regions. Here are a couple articles on this topic:

Large PDF files when printing to PDF from Revit in certain views/sheets

Slow printing from Revit in certain views/sheets

The issue that prompted this thread was a change in behavior after installing R2 onto Revit 2016.

Can anyone confirm if the 2016 R2 issues seen are specific to printing non-rectangular crop regions?
