Deleted SCAN!!!

Please tell me this is not the case. i imported scan from a BLK360 and it created a recap project. I deleted some scan FROM THE RECAP PROJECT. which i was not expecting to actually DELETE the actual RCS file from the hard drive. why would it do this? so now i am only left with the RCC and RCH files. is this what really happened and if it is, its crazy, deleting a scan out of a project should not erase the data from your hard drive.

Did you delete the scan from the project before indexing (e.g., from either the import screen or from the "unregistered scans" group on the registration screen)?  If you delete the scan in the import/registration workflow before indexing, an RCS file is never created.  You will need to re-transfer the project from the iPad to use it in a project.

If you delete a scan from the Project Navigator after indexing, it should not remove the RCS from disk.

If your workflow was different than either above, can you provide a more detailed description?

Thanks,

Michael

I downloaded the two scan groups from the iPad
Opened in recap pro
While registering I noticed that one scan was dark and I would not be able to register one group to the other so I decided to just split the I to two projects so I removed one group of scans and then finish registering and indexing.

I went to start a new project to import the removed scans and they were gone.

I already erased them from the iPad to free up space for more scans

Hi @cervellione,

Thank you for your reply. You can download scans from BLK360 scanners by clicking on "Storage" and selecting scans that you want to download again.

no it was not very helpful.

i am aware that i could just redownload the scans but the issue is they were erased to free up room for more scans.

the question is...

is it normal for the scans to be deleted off the hard drive after they have been synced if the scan is removed from the recap project?

1. i would expect that all data downloaded from the ipad would not be erased unless i actually erased it off the hard drive. removing a scan from recap project should not remove the data from my hard drive.

so after syncing the data to my hard drive from the ipad, then removing some scans from a recap project how do i get that data back to a new recap project.

to show you what i mean here is the ipad dump. you can see there are rcs files associated with the first 10 scans but not for scans 11-17 and this is where the problem is how do i get 11-17 back into a recap project.  see image attached

To answer your question:  "is it normal for the scans to be deleted off the hard drive after they have been synced if the scan is removed from the recap project?"

As I mentioned, the RCS files were not deleted from your PC.  If you remove scans from the import or registration screens before indexing them, RCS files are not created for those scans.  This is why you do not have RCS files for scans 11-17. The left-over pieces of those scans that you can find on disk are not usable.  If you have deleted the project from the iPad, you will need to re-transfer the desired scans from the BLK360 into a new project and transfer that to your PC.

As a work-around, if you need to break a project into multiple projects like this in the future, you can skip registration on the PC and index all of the files first.  Then, go back to the registration workflow to remove unwanted scans and register the rest.  The deleted scans will be complete and usable in other projects.

ok now i understand so the actual scan data is not in a usable format out of the ipad only after the initial indexing on a desktop does it become usable.

i would only suggest that a warning dialogue comes up on the initial transfer if you remove a scan stating that the scan will not be transferred to the computer if you remove it. making you aware of this or add and an unattended "transfer and index" mode which bypases any GUI dialogues to the process that way i can quickly dump the scan data off the ipad and deal with indexing and cleaning later.

I was on site for 6 hrs scanning 2 sites with over 50 scans, i needed to dump the files to my laptop in the field to free up room ....so now i know.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I agree, we can do more to prevent people from transferring data that they think is safely backed up but isn't actually usable.
