Mudbox 2018 mirror sculpting appears uneven / not symmetrical.

Hi Folks,

I'm trying to sculpt a character in the updated Mudbox 2018.2 on a Mac OS El Capitan 10.11.6 and I'm using a model I created in Maya 2018.

Before I transferred it over to Mudbox, I did the following:

  • deleted the half the mesh down the middle on the x-axis
  • lined up all vertices on the cut edge to meet 0.000 settings
  • mirrored the mesh and checked for any doubled-up vertices etc.

The mesh looked good to go, so I proceeded to send it to Mudbox.

I'm adding sculpt layers (3 so far) and levels (so far only up to level 2), and am trying to create a symmetrical sculpt before I proceed to turning mirror off and customising each side of the model, however, I'm experiencing an uneven mirror sculpt at this early stage and its hindering my progress. I select the object, and using the sculpt tool, click on mirror X in the tool settings. This works to a degree, I am successfully sculpting on both sides in a mirror fashion, however, the right side is much stronger than the left, as in any peaks I sculpt appear higher on the right than the left.

I thought it might've been due to a tilted perspective camera, but I reset it and it's still unevenly sculpting. I've also tried both LocalX and X settings in the mirror drop menu, but no luck.

Here's the thing though, I tried testing a whole new file using the cube, and the mirror setting is fine, so I guess it's something to do with my Maya model I brought in. Is there any way I can fix the symmetry up here in Mudbox?

Any help is appreciated, I'm a bit of a newbie.

Thanks.

Accepted solution
You certainly can - use the Mesh -> Make Symmetrical command.

HI Jill,

Thanks for your reply, that worked a treat 🙂

I also tested my Maya file and re-applied the delete all by type and freeze transformations and all worked when I sent to MB and sculpted, so all good.

Appreciate your help.
