Viewport 2.0 and Maya 2014

Hello

I’m running Maya 2014, on a mac running OSX 10.11.6 using a NVIDIA Quadro K5000 3584 MB

However, under preferences/display/ there is nothing there for Viewport 2.0 to change settings?

I have seen posts in forums where people are using Viewport 2.0 in maya 2013 and have this feature

is there a plug-in or something I’m missing?

Hi!

DirectX is a Windows feature, so you can't use this as Rendering Engine with macOS.

(BTW, this was added with Maya 2013 Extension / Maya 2014, so this is not a basic feature of Maya 2013).

So what I hear you saying is that viewport 2.0 is a feature in Maya 2014 that Mac users cannot use

If so, is there a solution around this? i.e. Plug-in, Extension  Etc.

if not, can you suggest any links that show the best way to setup a playblast animation to make it

more realistic?

Hi!

You can use Viewport 2.0 on Mac but only with OpenGL and not with DirectX.

If you want more realism, then I recommend to render an image sequence with Mental Ray or upgrade to the latest Maya version and use one of the newer Materials like aiStandardSurface or standardSurface for a Playblast or Hardware Rendering with Viewport 2.0 .

ok, however i have no way to select it, as there is no viewport options in maya/pref/display

and mental ray is not available in my render settings, am guessing i will need to re-load Mental Ray

and then i will see the option in the mental ray tab for OpenGL ?

Hi!

1. If you have V-Ray you don't need Mental Ray, use V-Ray instead for Rendering.

2. Viewport 2.0 will not be selected in Preferences, you can select it in Viewport menu:

Renderer -> Viewport 2.0 .

If it's not available, try  a reset of your Maya Preferences

yes, i use Vray for my hi quality rendering, but its way too slow to do animations even with multipule CPU. Also, in the render settings, the Vray tab only has 3 options for renderers, CPU, OpenCL and CUDA. none of which change the quality of Viewport 2.0 when selected in the renderer drop down menu. Viewport 2.0 just seems to not work at all even when changing the options from the options box, It doesn't seam to reconize the vray lights only the enviro sun light, so the viewport is dark. Any suggestions, or is this just how it is with mac os ?

Thanks for all your help

Hi!

"Viewport 2.0 just seems to not work at all"

- What does this mean?

- If you create a new scene and then a polyCube, can you see the cube?

If yes, then Viewport 2.0 works.

There seems to be a complete misunderstanding.

- In Maya you have the Viewport for modeling and building your scene, the main focus here is on speed and functionality.

- For creating a "good" looking output you need to render the scene with a renderer like V-Ray.

- The settings for V-Ray have nothing to do with Viewport 2.0 .

- Playblast is only intended to create a preview file to judge an animation that cannot be played back in real time in Maya Viewport, it's not a feature to create a final output.

I can't say if V-Ray lights are supported in Viewport in Maya 2014, but it's irrelevant as you only get V-Ray quality when using V-Ray to render an image and not in Viewort 2.0 . If rendering with V-Ray is slow, then I recommend to optimize your render settings or get better hardware, you can't simply use Viewport 2.0 and expect the same quality in real time.

So these are you options:

1. Optimize your render settings or get better hardware to render with V-Ray.

2. Get the latest Maya version and try newer Materials + Viewport 2.0.

(But also here you will not get the same quality as with offline rendering)

Hi!

It seems the materials you are using are not supported for this Viewport mode (which by the way is not better than Viewport 2.0) .

If you assign a Maya Phong material and edit the Color or assign a texture, can you see this?

not sure if its a corruption or what, but viewport 2.0 shows a blue wireframe of a chair that isnt there, HQ rendering is dark, even though i uped the light intensity, and default works as it always worked. see attached samples, (the system would only allow me to attach 2 attachments, even after it says "Maximum number of attachments allowed is: 3"

not sure whats going on there

Hi!

I can't see any problems here.

Without a scene-file I can't confirm any issues.

Still missing the answer for my question before, does Phong Color work?

Hi!

Based on the current information  I don't think there is any corruption, the issues seem to be caused by scene setup and settings.

Viewport 2.0 and High Quality Viewport are completely different, also the High Quality Viewport is slower than Viewport 2.0, that's normal.

I recommend to use only one Viewport and not to switch from one to the other, if not really needed for some reason.
