Creating water like bump map with noise

Hello!

I am trying to create water on a plane with Vray and maya noise as a bump map. Is there any way to combine different noises in order to make it look more realistic and not just perfectly looped?

Thank you in advance,

Cheers, Steffen

Hi @steffen.hampel  and welcome to the community!

You could follow along with something like this to get a basic noise:

Then there's this one, which while it isn't in English, covers a much more detailed process and gets a pretty solid render:

Is it possible to scale the plane without losing the bump effect?

How is the bump set up?

Like the second video tutorial, the one in arab. Almost no problem doing exactly as he says, but if i need, let's say a sea, i need a bigger plane. After scaling up the plane i tried to move some parameters in the vray water, but i ended up nowhere.

Boss.jpgThe Vray water is not very good, Boss system is much better for lakes and oceans.

Also anytime you scale something you need to freeze the transforms and recalculate the displacement amount.

Thanks.

1. What is boss system?

Does it work with Vray?

2. I don't really know much, sorry. How do you recalculate the bump map?

Boss is a water system in Maya , it's part of Bifrost but it doesn't involve simulations , there are very good tutorials on YouTube, then the ocean shader  with water depth can be set up in Vray, you can use real geometry or vector displacement like the Vray water. You can add foam as well but is not very realistic.

To recalculate the bump you need to do several tests increasing the number until you get the desired amount, you can do in IPR.

The vray water can be used for small lakes and ponds but not for an ocean because it doesn't have a peak on the waves like Boss.

You can also use Vray Phoenix  system but that is a separate software.

Also when using vector displacement in Vray you need to use Explicit and enter negative numbers for min value and increase your max values according to your scale.

Here's a Boss ocean patch of 400feet.BossOcean.jpg

Thanks.

I'll try that.  😉

I already found some tutorial online, and they seems good.

But, are you suggesting in using boss and then applying the ocean shader on the polygon?

Yes without a shader you can't render anything. You have to make the Vray ocean shader to see the results.
