Batch Render not working on W7

Hi Folks,

Maya 2018 Batch Render is not working on W7. It works on W10. The Batch Render Monitor reports that the rendering is complete but when we go looking for the file, it is no where to be found.

Any help will be most welcome.

Thanks,

Alan

Hi @yipchoya

Does this happen with a fresh Maya scene as well or is it scene specific?

Also, when you get a chance can you please post your hardware specs?

Steps to find your pc specs can be found here!

Let me know if anything changes!

Hi Sean,

thanks for your response. The systems that we are having the most problems regarding rendering are based on iMacs running Bootcamp (we are currently using the Windows side) Windows 7, Intel i7 3ghz, 16 GB 1333 MHZ, AMD Radeon 6970 2GB. We do not have the same issue with newer iMacs running Windows 10.

Thanks for your help,

Alan

Oops,

this issue is not scene specific.

Hi @yipchoya

Ah ok, in that case it can be a bit hard to test since I don't have access to a mac with bootcamp/W7 etc.

That said, when you go to batch render are there any error logs in the script editor?

Hi Sean,

the only message that we get is the Batch Render Monitor monitor reporting that the render is complete, but when we go looking for it in the specified directory, nothing is there.

Thanks,

Alan

Hi @yipchoya

Does this occur if you do a normal render or render sequence or does it only happen when you batch render?

Hi there,

I'm having a similar issue at work, running Maya 2018 for Windows 10.

We purchased Mental Ray but for some reason I'm only able to render single shots. I'm not able to batch render either Mental Ray, Maya Software of any other format.

The following message pops up on a separate window: LaunchRender has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Please close the program.

Then when I close the window it says Rendering Completed in the Command Line but no render is done.

Please, any help is much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi @Anonymous and welcome to the community!

We actually no longer support Mental Ray as of Maya 2017 so that may be why you're seeing this issue. You may want to reach out to Nvidia since they still support Mental Ray.

Thanks for replaying Sean.

What happens is we bought Mental Ray plug-in from Nvidia a few months ago, and it runs perfect in Maya 2018. The only thing that doesn't work is Batch Rendering / Render Sequence.

Anyhow, even Maya Software doesn't batch render.

Hi @Anonymous

Does your batch renders fail on an empty scene of Maya as well or is it scene specific?

If it is scene specific, when you get a chance, can you please zip and attach the scene file here or via dropbox/google drive or another file sharing program so I can take a look at it?

It is not scene specific as it occurs in any maya scene I come up with.

Unfortunately I cannot share the Maya scene I've been working on due to NDA reasons. So I'm sending you a Maya scene with just a cube animation since the batch render issue happens in any case.

As a side note: I've been trying to Render Sequence as an alternate solution and a message error had been showing up saying I'd have to contact Nvidia to purchase a license, even though we did it 3 or 4 months ago. However, all of a sudden, I'm able to Render Sequence my scene today. (?) Batch render still doesn't work though, for either Mental Ray, Maya Software, etc.

Please, let me know if your findings as this is a time sensitive project.

Thanks for your attention,

Pedro.

Hi @Anonymous

I actually forgot your issue is different! Since you're seeing the MayaBatch has stopped working error, we actually have an article on this!

The issue might be related to a 3rd party plug-in and/or your settings/preferences.

Please try deleting your settings/preferences and if you have any 3rd party plug-ins, disable them then try to render!

Hey,

I've tried deleting preferences already, it doesn't help 😞

It says LaunchRender stopped working, not MayaBatch. Not sure if it really matters...

Could you please give me an example of what would be a third party plug-in? MASH? Arnold? I don't have any atypical plug-in running other than the default ones and Mental Ray.

Also, I just noticed Render Sequence oscillates (sometimes it starts rendering, sometimes it tells me to buy the Mental Ray license, even though I already did.) This is all very weird!

Did you have a chance to load the Maya scene I sent you?

Anything can help at this point.. Kudos to you!

Hi Sean,
we have never gotten the issue solved. At this time, with our curriculum schedule being so cramped due to time lost from Harvey and the "Blizzard of 2018", we are going to forego the rendering step and concentrate on learning the rest of what Maya has to offer. We are planning to shift over from the Windows platform to Mac this Summer, so we will hope for the best with the changeover. Thank you for responding to our inquiries.
Sincerely,

Hi @Anonymous

Ah my mistake I confused the render errors. I was able to open your scene and renderered it fine. I understand your work is confidential and under NDA but if you would like you could send it to me via private message or to my autodesk email at sean.heasley@autodesk.com. We work with confidential files all the time so you don't have to worry Smiley Wink

Third party plugins are anything that dont come with Maya by default like Night Shade UV editor for example.

Its very unusual that your render sequence works sometimes but not others so I feel like that may be an issue on Nvidias end with your license, however that won't solve the batch render issue Smiley Frustrated.

Out of curiosity, can you try disabling and completely removing Mental Ray then try to Batch Render with Maya software?

Hi Sean,

thanks for checking in with us. The issue only happens when we use Batch Render. Render sequence works great but we haven't figured out a way to save it as a .mov or .avi as yet. In answer to your question, the answer is no. So unless we get a solution during the current semester, students will have to play their animations through Maya. There is no time to introduce them to Adobe Premiere so that they can render .tgas and convert through AP to the required movie formats.

All the best,

Alan

Hi @yipchoya

I did some more digging and found that Mental Ray only renders to an image sequence - you can create a video file from this image sequence with the packaged FCheck program, or use one of the numerous 3rd party video apps out there.

Also, rendering directly to video has many downsides, such as:

-If for some reason the render freezes, or software crashes - you have to restart your entire render from frame 1. With image sequence rendering, you just continue rendering the frames you need.

-Slower rendering speed, since you are adding the burden of video encoding while rendering - both of which are highly cpu intensive processes

-Selecting the 'right' encoding settings for your render is a bit of trial-and-error, and a balancing act between file size and video quality - and since you can't actually see your video till it's done, you could end up re-rendering multiple times.

By chance, could you please post a video of the issue happening on your machine so I can see if there's anything noticeably different on your set up then mine?

If you need a video capturing program, Screencast is a great option that we use here at Autodesk
