Issue with character mesh

Hey guys, so i'm new to Maya and recently started a project on Maya 2013 using the Joan of Arc tutorial..

I assigned a blinn material onto the mesh and i kept going with it. However, as you can see there is a spot in the forehead that is more pronounced than the other shading. As well as dark lines running from the tear duct to the end of the nose and the middle of the eye to the chin. Ive tried changing the material and moving the vertices and such around but it isn't making a difference.. if anyone could tell me why this is happening and how i can fix it, that would be fantastic! Thanks so much!

Usually probles like these occure when your normals are flipped of if the vertices are not joined or attached. To fix this try the following:

Check Normals:

1) Select your model.

2) Go to Display > Polygons > Face Normals.

3) Check the normals on those faces.

4) If they are flipped go to face select mode select the troubled faces and go to Normals > Reverse.

Attach Vertices:

1) Go to vertex mode.

2) Drag Select all Verts then go to Edit Mesh > Merge.

Hope that helps.
