editing pivots and snapping to vertex after updating to 2016ext2sp1

Hi all. After updating Maya 2016 to extension2 SP1 I am getting odd behaviour while trying to edit the pivot of an object where the pivot point is not snapping to the verts. Repro:

  1. create object and move it away from the origin
  2. go into 'edit pivot' mode (hold 'd' on keyboard)
  3. while holding 'd', hold 'v' to vertex snap and attempt to snap the pivot to one of the objects vertices
  4. The pivot point snaps to the objects verts as if the objects translation was 0,0,0
  5. Freezing transform on the object results in expected behaviour but this is not an acceptable work around.

Anyone else find this problem? Is it a new 'feature' and I just need to edit my preferences? I cant seem to find any preference/setting that would cause the pivot to behave this way so I'm thinking its a bug.

Cheers

Dave

Working fine here. BTW, you don't need to hold the 'd' key down...just hit it once to toggle edit mode on, then again to toggle it off.

thanks for trying it out, could I be stuck in some sort of intentional 'mode' or feature?
As for the 'd' key, Ive been holding it down for so many years now it will be a struggle to remember to let it go 🙂

Have you tried hitting the reset button in the move tool settings? Also, make sure you don't have any other snapping enabled. (But I imagine you've already checked that.)

Yes, muscle memory is hard to forget.

Yes I tried 'reset', no joy there. Looking at it further, the mesh could be corrupted in some way. I cant snap anything to the objects verts... Any chance I could send you the mesh to look at? Its about 100 polys 🙂

Sure...either attach it here or PM it to me.

Here it is! I've tried it on 2 difference machines now so I am confident it should be broken for you too. If you freeze transforms on the object it will work fine so DONT freeze transforms 🙂   Just try to snap to the points of the object.

Cheers!

Yeah...that thing is pretty funky. I'd get rid of it if I were you.

ha! well the problem is I have a scene full of these objects. The scene was created in Maya2016 Ext1 SP6 and it works fine there. Looks like I'll have to skip the upgrade to Ext2. Thanks for taking a look though!

seems like it´s a bug related to scene scale.

two possible workarounds:
1. scale it down by 0.1 and it works. if your finished modeling scale it up again.

2. when you press and hold d and than add shift into the mix it will position your pivot to edges/vertices/faces. (d+ctrl will orient and d+ctrl+shift will aim it) exact behaviour will slightly differ depending what you have checked in the d + rmb menu. i have usually snap pivot position off. if it´s on just holding d and clicking components will position and orent your pivot.
this works also with your unscaled object.

Thanks for taking a look at my scene. I am going to freeze transforms and live with it as a bug.
Thanks for your time
