Changing singular pivot alignment

Hi. I'm running into a problem that wasn't there before. I seem to remember being able to set the pivot alignment of individual skeleton joints but as it is, when I change one alignment all the other joints on the entire skeleton changes the same way. Almost as if they are all connected through some kind of alignment constraint but I don't even see how that is even possible. Is this a glitch, or something I can turn off?
As it is now I just simply can't use rigging in Maya.
I would really apriciate some advice on the matter.

Are you referring to the local rotation axis?  You can adjust that per joint without affecting other joints.

Yes, I know. But that's what doesn't work. I press "D" or "Incert" and change the alignment, but when I check any other joint they all changed. Every single local rotation axis changes when I change one of them. And it's not just the connected once. All of them in the entire scene even if the skeletons are separate.
As my copy of the program is a student version I really can't reinstall the damnd thing either.
So I'm hoping anyone have a fix.

Local rotation axis is not "D" or "Insert".  You have to go into component mode and display local rotation axis.  Select the one you want to adjust and rotate it to your liking.  Nothing else will change except for the one you selected.

So it might just be that I have simply forgotten how to do it. Huh. It does ring a bell when I read your post.
Thanks.
