Improvements to polyRemesh and polyRetopo

Improvements to polyRemesh and polyRetopo

polyRemesh and polyRetopo are amazing tools particularly for hard surface modeling. It makes the usage of booleans a lot more acceptable and drastically helps speed up workflow for complex shapes with rounded cutouts. However, it is not perfect.

1. It does not handle cylinders particularly well. Straight edges along the length often bend become more diagonal.

2. It often creates spiraling edge loops which create further problems when smoothing, selecting and optimizing.

3. Could use more options to tweak retopology such as being able to draw "Retopo Guides" on the mesh using existing vertices to help guide the flow of retopology.

Hope to see you roll out more updates to this feature as it is incredibly handy.

these are not officially implemented, maybe they will not see the official implementation never

These nodes would be extremely useful to my shop.

I’m frankly a touch irritated they are still not available for Mac environments.

Can we expect any news on when, or if, they will be made available?

I have seen today, there's a new plugin from exoside, maybe try this

https://exoside.com/quadremesher/

any news on this ?

The actual polyRetopo from Maya 2019.2, do that control using the hard edges of your surface.

You mark then up, then do polyRemesh then polyRetopo and it is.

Helps a lot!

polyRetopo is good. It's useful. Please make it available on Mac.

Maya 2020 released, and voila. All desires realised.

Retopo and Remesh on All Maya, windows and mac.

Exoside Quad Remesher is much more better than Maya 2020 Retopo, it's more smart, more speed, more easy to use. Autodesk should buy it, like always do.

polyRetopo does not work in Maya 2018. Any suggestions? Thanks

QuadRemesh.

Tired it; didn't work.

polyRemesh works fine; just can't get the polyRetopo to work. Thanks anyways.

@Anonymous Tried using it on Mac / 2020. Did a very simple boolean (cube / sphere cutout) and attempted to retopo it.

The remesh step works fine. Retopo absolutely refuses to run, throwing up esoteric error messages in the Script Editor. No amount of mesh cleanup seems to help.

@kimonmatara , what i did is install that plugin (QuadRemesh), that work better then the retopo stock. Search for it you will see it's great. I just installed Maya 2020, so i can't say anything from it yet.

I agree that the remesh and retopo commands/nodes still need work to make them faster but people keep pointing QuadRemesh. While it is faster than Maya's nodes, QuadRemesh it has the same edge loop issues pointed out in the original post. That is not a bug but a feature of how the algorithm works. From this point of view I don't think it's better than Maya's nodes.

Let me see, ValentinN84.

Both have same functionality;

Both have similar artefacts;

But one is faster;

And you say, one is no better them the other?

Ok them!

My problem wasn’t speed. My problem is that I couldn’t get the command to
work. It errored out on a really really basic test (sphere / cube boolean).

Easy. And know you can do it? Hope so!
