Undo queue keeps turning off

Hey guys,

I'm using Maya 2018 Student Version and got in some trouble with my undo queue.

From time to time it happens, that the undo queue turns off by no reason. I have no idea why this is happening. I have to manually enter the preferences and change it back to activated every time. Is there any known way to deactivate it without entering the preferences menu?

I work with files from other students, can it happen when I place a reference or when I copy some Nodes to another Scene?

Here are my loaded plugins:

  • svgFileTranslator
  • invertShape
  • mayaHIK
  • GamePipeline
  • curveWarp
  • CloudImportExport
  • tiffFloatReader
  • MASH
  • poseInterpolator

Hi @Anonymous and welcome to the community!

This is a bit unusual but I'm curious if this is happening because of the other student files being opened on your machine.

Does the undo que turn off at all while you're working on your own scenes and not another students?

Also are you setting the project whenever you open the files? It's possible if you aren't setting one that the prefs may not be getting saved properly.

When you get a chance, please provide me with any more additional information and/or let me know if anything changes!

Thank you for your answer!

I try to explain what happened the last time I can remember this issue.

First off, every time I am working, I double check if my project is set correctly. I was working on my environment for quite a few hours and as far is I remember without this problem. I got a Maya scene from one of my team members with his animated character. I put his scene in my project folder and placed it as a reference (default settings) in my environment. I then moved the character around and hit Z, the undo queue was turned off.

I tried to reproduce this but it did not happen again (same scenes). Not if I reference the scene from within the project and not from another location.

Sadly I am not sure if this happened before I started to work with scenes from other people. But I remember I got in big trouble once.

So how are the settings saved? I tweak them and hit save in the preferences menu, where are they saved? Am I right, that all changes will revert if Maya crashes? What you said sounds like the settings also have to do with the saved scenes?

Hi @Anonymous

The settings are saved in your prefs folder which can be found at Documents\maya\2018\prefs.

This is pretty unusual but I believe the issue is from the different scene files. Do your students all have the Undo que set up the same as you?

Yeah I knew about the prefs folder. But it sounds like an referenced scene could change them in a weird way too, thats what I was curious about.

The problem with our workstations at the university is, that everyone is messing with the preferences so hard. I reset Maya every time I work there but no one else does that.

For me my question is answered. You said there is in fact no way to change this setting by accident and I told you about the problem. I let you guys know if I found out more about this problem.

Thank you for your help!

Hi!

If you have problem with other people/scenes messing up preferences.

In Preferences:  Settings -> Save Actions -> Save all preferences when Maya exits ("disable")

This way you have better control when and what changes will be saved.

I'm having the same issue and no matter how often I save it seems to keep coming back. I'm the only person using this machine and I never ever touch those settings.

This is happening to me as well.  Sometimes it happens when I am in the middle of working on an opened project, I don't even have to restart.  Tried saving my preferences but still coming back.  This is Maya 2018.

Thanks

same here.  it's random for me as well.  Can't replicate it.  Just happens whenever it wants to.  Between this and the NaN problem with the camera it's become frustrating as all get out.

I just started. I have not even gone into project sharing and I'am the only user of this computer. the only person in the household matter of fact and I'am having the same issue.

UPDATE: I have resolved all issues by resetting preferences. I don't know what happened, I did experience a few severe crashes because of a misconfigured Wacom tablet. the issues including this one started during that time. so I can only logically deduce that something got corrupted.

I've had this irritating problem in Maya for years.  I don't think deleting preference files is a solution. I'm glad it fixed your problem but it's a short term solution, along with thousands of other issues I have with Maya, deleting the prefs does solve some but they always come back.

One solution I think Maya should do in regards to this issueis remove the 'turn off' function of the Undo. Why is it even there? I can't honestly think of any reason why someone wouldn't want to use undo, unless they're still using a computer with 16 megs of ram?

I was just about to post this issue I've been experiencing. My undo turns itself off randomly. Is there a hidden shortcut for turning the undo queue off in preferences we're unaware of?

sadly, no… and you just reminded me to check mine, because it’s probably not set again.

We are having the same problem also.. Really irritating. Why the hell is there even such an option. Why would someone ever want an undo queue off???

For me, the thing that most often causes the undo queue to turn off is running a script.  Especially if the script hits an error.  In general the script does something like this:

  1. Turn off undo queue.
  2. Do a bunch of stuff.
  3. Turn the undo queue back on.

But if the script hits an error during "do a bunch of stuff", it exits and never gets around to "turn the undo queue back on".

Whenever you run into this problem, I would make a note of what scripts or tools you used during this Maya session.  Especially those scripts that hit an error while running or were downloaded from the internet.  Eventually you may see a pattern, like "Every time my undo queue turns off, I had used the XYZ script within the previous thirty minutes."

Why would you ever want undo to be turned off? This is insane. My undo queue has been turned off a couple times now during work on my current project. Never had this happen ever in 10 years of working with Maya. It seems like the worst possible feature imaginable. Undo should also be on my default on camera movements.
