Undo queue keeps turning off

Hey guys,

I'm using Maya 2018 Student Version and got in some trouble with my undo queue.

From time to time it happens, that the undo queue turns off by no reason. I have no idea why this is happening. I have to manually enter the preferences and change it back to activated every time. Is there any known way to deactivate it without entering the preferences menu?

I work with files from other students, can it happen when I place a reference or when I copy some Nodes to another Scene?

Here are my loaded plugins:

  • svgFileTranslator
  • invertShape
  • mayaHIK
  • GamePipeline
  • curveWarp
  • CloudImportExport
  • tiffFloatReader
  • MASH
  • poseInterpolator
  • ATFPlugin
  • hairPhysicalShader
  • ikSpringSolver
  • ik2Bsolver
  • AbcExport
  • retargeterNodes
  • gameFbxExporter
  • VectorRender
  • OpenEXRLoader
  • lookdevKit
  • Unfold3D
  • mayaCharacterization
  • Type
  • Boss
  • mtoa
  • meshReorder
  • modelingToolkit
  • rotateHelper
  • MayaMuscle
  • matrixNodes
  • AbcImport
  • autoLoader
  • deformerEvaluator
  • sceneAssembly
  • gpuCache
  • OneClick
  • nearestPointOnMesh
  • shaderFXPlugin
  • objExport
  • renderSetup
  • GPUBuiltInDeformer
  • ArubaTessellator
  • stereoCamera
  • quatNodes
  • fbxmaya

Thank you for your help!

well, here is someone that creates words or answers to another person that hasnt said or asked something, where do I say that Maya is not a great application? I am asking why they not solve the problem that a free software hasnt? I use the 3 apps, Max, Maya and Blender, all of them has pros and cons, very different from each other, but again, I am asking, why this issue hasnt been solved in years?

Hi,

Are you running bonus tools or any other plugins not included with Maya? (since some plugins have been known to disable undo for performance)

We are very interested in fixing this issue but we need repro steps to be able to narrow this down to a specific plugin or command first.

Thanks.

hi brentmc, thanks for your kind answer, I am not using any third party plugin, even I have formatted my computer and re installed Maya from scratch, Some times I use ACES, but this happens when I am not using ACES and when I am using it, and it happens randomly.

thanks!

Nope, this has happened for years and years with clean installs of maya too, I’ve tested it with clean installs on new computers..

Hi,

I have been informed that Arnold MTOA 4.2.1 which ships with Maya 2022.1 has an issue that can disable the undo queue when opening scenes and the dev team is aware of this issue.

Thanks.

Maya 2022.2 just dropped and Arnold has been updated to 4.2.4 which should fix the Arnold-related undo queue issue.

As nice as it is you're hitting that bug, how about fixing the undo queue issues that pre-date Arnold? Again, for the last time, how about disabling the ability for the undo queue to turn off at all across your entire codebase?

hi!

Yeah I did read that some time ago, but I need to use Maya 2020 and 2021 because Maya 2022 doesnt allow me to use my old rigs that I have been working on since 2 years ago, it drops me errors , and not to mention that Maya 2022 closes suddenly sometimes when using old third party plugins that I need to use

I also encounter this when using MASH very commonly, just as a point of
reference if that's helpful.

This... Why even have the option in the first place? Who in their right mind would NOT want to be able to undo???

If their machine can't handle the undo queue, maybe their computer simply isn't fit for Maya. This is such a stupid issue....

It's a bug, that keeps happening in all versions of Maya, since years. It undo turns off for no reason when it wants to. One day it's turned on, another it turns it off. And I've never realized why someone would prefer to work with undo turned off - that option should never exists.

Maya 2022.3 - this is still happening.

In my experience... company politics usually causes this kind of insanity. The logic of the feature is suspicious, but even if there's a good reason for it, years after the issue was "elevated" nothing has happened.

Maintenance [bug-fixing] budgets are very small - new features get new customers. Its likely there's one qualified lead maintenance developer & he has a beef with the company - he'll have no intention of fixing it until he gets more money. And we the customer who pay thousands each year get shafted.

Hi,

Nothing to do with company politics. I don't know where you worked in the past but nothing like what you describe goes on here and there is no bug-fix budget or hypothetical lead maintenance developer with a chip on his shoulder!? All developers here fix bugs AND develop new features.

The key to getting issues fixed is having a reliable way to reproduce them. Undo issues are often hard to isolate since 1) they may not be noticed right away and 2) they could be coming from a 3rd party plugin or script.

We made some changes in Maya 2023 to make the undo queue more resiliant (to script/command errors) but those changes were not backported to Maya 2022 because we did not have a reproducible bug report to help us narrow down the cause of this issue.

I appreciate this isn’t an easy one to fix as it’s so random, but if it helps, I don’t use third party tools that are not bundled with the core program.

I also have the issue more than I would like, where the last command doesn’t undo, but instead all the commands before it. If I then try to redo, I’m often confronted with “there are no more commands to redo” which there are, so I can’t even get back to the main issue and am left in some messy limbo with no choice but to revert to last save.

Never a fun moment

Hi, thanks for the reply! Are you guys working on Apple Silicon m1 support? It’s been 16 months and all other 3d programs have native support already. Houdini, Blender, Cinema 4D.. Don’t you have enough funds over there? Do you need more money?

Hi,

As a public company we can't comment on future development so silence on public forums is not really an indicator of anything.

Consider that 1) Apple has only recently released a pro level M1 desktop machine (Mac Studio) with more than 16 GB of RAM and 2) a large software application may have many software dependencies that all need to be updated and 3) there are external dependencies to consider like the VFX reference platform. (which is important in large pipelines that integrate software from different vendors)

Hi,

1) That is not what I said and 2) I am not an official company spokeperson. Just a Maya developer trying to communicate openly on the forums and help out where I can.

To parphrase my previous reply. The undo issue is probably not a single defect and it can be hard to get reproducible bug reports for undo issues. (and rest assured that any reproducible ones we get will get fixed)

Historically, 3rd party plugins will disable undo for various reasons from performance or because they want to call Maya commands during interaction where it would be too heavy to have an undo event for each mouse event so we also have to establish if the issue is with Maya or a 3rd party plugin.

Anyway, I would appreciate if we could keep the conversation constructive.

The same happens with the Prefs issue. Every now and then happens to me to have to delete prefs to make Maya work again. As the undo problem, it's very annoying and this issue happens since the early versions of Maya. This bug is so ordinary for Autodesk, that the official support always recommends, in first place, to delete prefs to fix Maya.
