Undo queue keeps turning off

Hey guys,

I'm using Maya 2018 Student Version and got in some trouble with my undo queue.

From time to time it happens, that the undo queue turns off by no reason. I have no idea why this is happening. I have to manually enter the preferences and change it back to activated every time. Is there any known way to deactivate it without entering the preferences menu?

I work with files from other students, can it happen when I place a reference or when I copy some Nodes to another Scene?

Here are my loaded plugins:

  • svgFileTranslator
  • invertShape
  • mayaHIK
  • GamePipeline
  • curveWarp
  • CloudImportExport
  • tiffFloatReader
  • MASH
  • poseInterpolator
  • ATFPlugin
  • hairPhysicalShader
  • ikSpringSolver
  • ik2Bsolver
  • AbcExport
  • retargeterNodes
  • gameFbxExporter
  • VectorRender
  • OpenEXRLoader
  • lookdevKit
  • Unfold3D
  • mayaCharacterization
  • Type
  • Boss
  • mtoa
  • meshReorder
  • modelingToolkit
  • rotateHelper
  • MayaMuscle
  • matrixNodes
  • AbcImport
  • autoLoader
  • deformerEvaluator

  • nearestPointOnMesh
  • shaderFXPlugin
  • objExport
  • renderSetup
  • GPUBuiltInDeformer

Thank you for your help!

Hi!

Increasing performance / saving RAM may be one possible reason.

For almost every setting you will find a useful purpose.

Don't even bother complaining on here - Area is where solutions go to die. 'Deleting Prefs' isn't an appropriate fix. That this happens to NUMEROUS customers FREQUENTLY without genuine explanation after so many years is unacceptable.

No, this issue has not been solved. I have no one else using my machine or Maya. It just randomly switches to no undo queue.

Please realize how serious an issue this is.

DO you have a Wacom tablet connected? I had my tablet configured incorrectly and that was causing it. I configured correctly, reset preferences by deleting folder and things been working fine ever since.

Not irrelevant if it solves his issue. I didn’t disable any buttons. I simply set the touch mode switch to off and then deleted prefs folder. Been working fine since.

My Wacom doesn’t have touch input.

Can we switch this from "being solved" to NOT being solved?

My wacom has all touch disabled and it happens to me in Maya 2018. I found I can make it happen if Im rendering, and then try to work (selecting objects etc) while that render is progressing, then try to undo an action during that render. (Im using Vray)

I didn't notice this had been 'solved'. Not on my machines it isn't. I run one with 2016 and 2018. 2016, no problem. 2018 not so good. My other workstation has (different licence) 2018 and 19 on it. I am still getting this and it is random. I can go through a session with no problem then the next one it reappears. If you're not diligent with your saves along the way this can (and has ) resulted in lost time. No-one else uses my machines. The undo command is one of the most basic. Why won't it work properly?

Having had my wrists slapped for starting another stream, I guess I will have to carry on here.

THIS IS NOT FIXED.

It is such a basic function that I don't know why this still happens. I have been using Maya since 4 (not 2004, Maya 4).I realise that there will be glitches but it occurred twice tonight on a crunch project. There were very few 'non-destructive; processes running through my head. I have Maya 2018 and 19 work and personal subscriptions. 2 different machines and licences. No-one else uses it. Deleting preferences does not work. It is so random that if I remember to check undo is switched on, I can't guarantee it will continue.

Given the details, any ideas? If the stream shows solved, do anyone look at it?

I work on a cintiq 22 hd (no touch). Seen it mentioned before. Is this problem?

I haven't heard of a legitimate solution.

I keep getting these emails. For years. Obviously it’s a thing that we’ll
have to get used to. Or use another program. Autodesk is obviously not
listening.

Autodesk, just call it a feature in 2020 and be done with it...

Is there a solution for this? I am still getting undo randomly switching off. On both machines, different logins. I have loaded up the latest version of 2019, cleared prefs and it still happens. Even if I check at the start of the day, it will still turn off at some point. I very rarely get through a working day without this happening and it getting extremely frustrating.

THIS IS NOT FIXED.

I've been using Maya this last month, FRESH INSTALL. And in this month this has happened at least 5 times.

And for some reason Maya keeps turning off the undo queue without notice. I only notice it when it's too late and I REALLY NEED TO UNDO. Get rid of this effing setting if you're not going to FIX IT.

FIX IT!

This is such BS.

I'm the only user on this computer.

I don't own a wacom tablet.

I'm using a fresh installation of Windows 10.

I'm coming back to Maya after 2 years and I still notice the same bugs. What are we paying subscription fees for?!

Reposting this, since this thread is getting long:

For me, the thing that most often causes the undo queue to turn off is running a script.  Especially if the script hits an error.  In general the script does something like this:

  1. Turn off undo queue.
  2. Do a bunch of stuff.
  3. Turn the undo queue back on.

But if the script hits an error during "do a bunch of stuff", it exits and never gets around to "turn the undo queue back on".

Whenever you run into this problem, I would make a note of what scripts or tools you used during this Maya session.  Especially those scripts that hit an error while running or were downloaded from the internet.  Eventually you may see a pattern, like "Every time my undo queue turns off, I had used the XYZ script within the previous thirty minutes."

No-one is turning undo queue off. That in this day and age that's even an
option still is completely unnecessary. Why would you want it off?

To be honest, I don't know for what reasons you would turn off the undo queue.  However, there are several places in Maya's built-in MEL scripts where it is turned off and then turned back on.  It looks like mostly it is turned off during UI updates.  There are a couple of cases where they mention not wasting memory.  I would assume scripts from external sources would have similar reasons for using it.

@RFlannery1 the point is that when you launch Maya, it will default to have undo settings turned off. This just happens at random, and usually when you need it the most. It's been ongoing now for years.
