Render Flag for Color Management / Output Transform

Hello there,

I was wondering if there is a render flag for command line rendering, where I can enable and choose the Output Transform (e.g. RAW or SRGB)? I was not able to find something in the documents so far.

A hint would be great.

Thanks in advance and for your time.

Hi @erce.erim

I'm not 100% sure if there is a specific flag that lets you choose the Output Transform.

We do however have some documentation that covers common flags for command line rendering.

You can read up on them here and here!

Please let me know if this helps solve your issue or if you need any more assistance!

Hey Sean, thanks for those links. I should have written that I have found those already. They did not solve my issue so far. If there is nothing in specific, I have to live with that. As in my problem with the isolate view mentioned - the files from our clients are set up very "special" and sometimes the renders (and layers) have been used in RAW and some have been used in SRGB - very bad setup. But we don´t have time to tweak all the scenes.

And it would have been pretty convenient to set the color managements output transform in render scripts.

Also, since we have multiple renderengines used in those scenes (MR & SW) we run into a lot of issues with the file formats. Some parts of the PSDs consist 32bit .EXR. That collides with Softwarerender. And we did find out that Layer Overrides may cause weird issues that our EXR´s come out faulty. (Maybe part of our version issue?) We would have wanted to set the -of flag for the mental ray and software render seperately. But I can´t find any info what the flag for EXR is. "-of exr" does not really work. Do you know by chance what it is?

Big thanks from Germany

I am asking this again, since it is pretty importand: What is the correct renderflag to output an open exr / .exr file?

Thanks in advance

Hi @erce.erim

Sorry for the delayed response!

I want to make sure I'm understanding you correctly, you're looking for a render flag option that can set the image output to EXR correct?

If I'm misunderstanding please let me know!

Hi!

As stated by Mental Ray manual:

-file_type "format"

so it should be

-file_type "exr"

Hey @mspeer unfortunately that doesn´s work. As stated here https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/maya/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2016/ENU/Maya/fil...

the flag for the output format is -of.

It is sad, that the help document there does not list the proper shortcuts of the file formats. It only directs to some pages of supported file formats and even there it doesn´t show them.

Hi @erce.erim

I believe the reason the flags are different is because that format is specific to Mental Ray where is the ones in the article you linked are for rendering with Mayas native renderers like Maya Hardware etc.

Therefore its possible that using that flag should work if you're rendering with Mental Ray.

Hi!

Render flags are render dependent and can change with different versions.

So i recommend to read the manual about this for Mental Ray in Maya 2016 ("-of" seems to be correct for Maya 2016).

Also keep in mind that this may only affect the "master" setting in Render Settings and not individual overrides.

Thanks guys - an interesting information. I didn´t know that different engines have different flags for the same function. I have to check that out. Any information about the correct flags for the fileformats? Still not quite sure about exr since none of the flags works till now: neither -of nor the one @mspeer mentioned.

Thanks for all.

Hi!

Does it not work in general or not with your scene-file?

Please test this with a new and simple scene-file.
