Similar and different features between Autodesk Maya and Blender.

So I just started using Autodesk Maya after realizing how drastically superior it is to Blender, the software that I was using prior to getting Maya, and I noticed there were some... Inconveniences. For instance, as I was animating this character I had imported from Blender, I wanted to animate him doing a front flip. Similar to what I would have done in Blender, I would select all the bones, that weren't locked to the body, that I wanted to move with the sequence, and I would start moving them and rotating all of the bones in the same axis, in a simultaneous manner. However, Instead of the bones rotating from the origin point of the selected joint, they began rotating according to their individual joint origin points. I was wondering if I could, like blender, change the type of pivot point. Moreover, I also wanted to know if there are any features that are shared across both softwares, and any features that are exclusive to only of the two aforementioned softwares.

I know that not all who encounter this question are able to answer it, as it is best answered by an individual who has used both Blender and Maya, but any and all help and/or advice is encouraged and appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi @Anonymous and welcome to the community!

It looks like you want to change the joints local axis. We have some documentation and steps on how to do so that can be found here!

As for your second question, there are many similarities and differences between Maya and Blender. Could you possibly give me some categories you'd like to know more about i.e modeling, animation etc.

It's pretty basic, but this video goes over some of the differences and may be useful to you!

Please let me know if this helps solve your issue or if you need any more information!

Hi @sean.heasley.

First of all, i'd like to thank you for replying to my problem so quickly, and I'd like to apologise for not replying sooner.

Although you have given me some additional Maya tips, the solution was not what I was seeking. In blender, I was able to change the type of pivot point; Median point, individual origins, Active element, Bounding box Centre and 3D Cursor. vs4TT.png

I believe the solution that you gave me was for the rotation axis that was applied to the pivot point.

My original question was in regards to changing the way I rotate the joints, and from which bone I am able to move the joints from, if that makes any sense.

In regards to the video that you sent, yes. It has helped me a lot in terms of identifying the features that are both exclusive to one of the two softwares, and the features that are shared between the two.

Thank you for taking interest with my problem, it is greatly appreciated.

Hi @Anonymous

Thank you for further explaining what you could do in Blender and how you would like to do it in Maya.

I read up a bit on the different pivot types like active element, median point etc and I know some of them are possible in Maya however I'm not entirely sure what you're looking to do in Maya.

I understand how you're trying to rotate the bones but it's a little hard for me to visualize it. When you get a chance, could you please post a gif or video of what you are trying to do and I will see how I can provide more assistance?

If you need a video capturing program, Screencast is a great option that we use here at Autodesk

Please let me know if anything changes!

Hi @Anonymous

I'm sure you've been busy but I just wanted to check in with you. When you get a chance, can you further explain/show what you're trying to do with the bones so I can see if I can provide more assistance?

Hi @Anonymous

I just wanted to check in to see if I can help you further. Have you had a chance to make a gif/video on how you're trying to manipulate the bones in your scene?
