Need help understanding exporting without smoothing

Hello, I am just starting out in Maya and am trying to export my model while maintaining the existing hard edges without smoothing, but when I export to fbx and bring into unreal engine to check, my model has smooth edges. How can I export while maintaining the hard edges? Any extra advice helps as well. Thank you for your help.

Hi!

 

Please re-import your fbx-file into a new Maya scene and check if the hard edges are still there, if yes then the normals are exported fine and the problem is at the Unreal import.

OK so it shows properly when i import the fbx into maya, should I then take this issue to the Unreal forums?

Hi!

 

You have to choose the right setting at the Import Dialog in Unreal ("Import Normals" or "Import Normals and Tangents" instead of "Compute Normals"):
