Multiple Graphics Card and Maya

Hey everyone 🙂

 

So I've got a bit of wired or Stupid question here in Subject of Multiple Graphics Card and Maya! (for some reason there no Clear Answer on line ) and this video kinda got me confused a bit as well ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtX5o-MlyaU )

 

Im about to start a project with heavy polycount and a lots of scene objects. For this project i’m investing in to 4X 1080TI ( this is for V-ray RT)

So what im trying to figure out is

 

1.Can Maya Utilise multiple Graphics card (NOT SLI!) for on view-port (for lighting no texture in this case.)?

 

2.Does having multiple Card help to increase how many polygons i can preview in maya?

 

Basically im trying to figure out if i need 1 Relly good Graphic Card (quadro) or should i get 4X 1080TI

Hi @vfxronin!

 

It's not a stupid question at all! With the power of GPU's today and the amount of heavy rendering/modeling/animating etc going on many users wonder if they are better off running multiple GPU's to make their workflow easier in Maya.

 

However at the moment Maya itself does not utilize dual GPU's. The only way to do this would be to use GPU accelerated programs, such as 3rd party render engines (Redshift, Octane, Furryball, etc) and programs/scripts to utilize multiple GPU's.

 

In your case especially where you are looking to have a high polycount/V-ray etc. I would recommend investing the money you would've spent on the other GPU's going towards a powerful CPU and RAM.

 

Rendering in Maya especially is CPU based instead of GPU based and while having a powerful GPU will show in the display port and help with modeling complex objects, it won't be especially helpful with rendering.

 

You'll definitely want a powerful CPU and adequate amount of RAM to handle working in large scenes, rendering scenes etc.

Okey now if got a 2 part question!!

1) is 1080ti good enough? For high poly count? If no then any other recommendations?

2) for large object count (scene graph ) for best performance do I need to max out my ram (128gb) ??

Hi @vfxronin

 

While I can't specifically recommend any cards, I can say that you'd want a dedicated GPU with at least 4GB of VRAM or more so the 1080ti would fit that description.

 

As for ram you shouldn't have to max it out but I would recommend 16GB or more.

Im a bit surprised to hear the 16gb! especially when Maya Screams about memory when you subdiv up especially on a sphere LOL!

Hi!

 

You will not get a precise answer to an unprecise question.

 

For a large amount of objects and a high Polygon Count you need a fast CPU, enough RAM and a good GPU.

For a very large amount of objects and a very high Polygon Count you need a very fast CPU, more RAM and a very good GPU.

(...if you want a good performance.)

 

You see the problem?

 

If you want the best performance, get the best hardware available for all components and as much RAM as possible.

Once you start getting into stupid-big numbers for hardware it's time to take a very serious look at what you're doing inside the program.  Do you really, REALLY, need all that detail?  All those faces?  Everywhere, every time, all the time?  Is there a way to do cheat, doing it easier and faster?

Smiley Very Happy dude on any day of the week i would Agree would you 100% 🙂 

 

If it was my own personal project i would do exactly as you say! but when the spec come form the Clinets and there need all i can do is make sure it a smooth ride as "possible".... 

 

The asste are coming for other sources not me!

Hello!

 

Hope that not in far future Maya will have possibility to use two or maybe more graphic cards. I think that Autodesk have enough possibilities to make it happen.

My system configuration
I7 7th generation 7700T (2.9 GHz)
8gb ram
500 hard disk.
Integrated graphics card Intel 630 video card.

When I working after that suddenly getting fatal error.

Is any system requirement recommended?

Is any chance graphic card GeForce 1050 ti 4gb ddr5 the fatal error problem recover?
