Maya out of device memory, but only using 20-30% of memory

Hi, I'm having issues with Maya 2018 whenever I trust to use edge loops and smooth. The object glitches into strange shapes, or disappears completely, which usually can't be undone.

Maya gives this error:
OpenCL Error: Out of device memory.
OpenCL Error: Out of resources.

I have 16GB RAM, but when I look at task manager, maya is only using 20-30% of memory, even with priority set to high.

Any ideas how to make maya use more memory? It obviously needs it, I'm totally stuck with deadlines fast approaching.

Hi!

OpenCL uses GPU and GPU RAM.

What subdivision type do you use, how much subdivisions, polygons?

For further help please upload the scene-file.

Hi @Anonymous and welcome to the community!

@mspeer made a good point and if you're using too many subdivisons, making the object too high poly, that could cause the memory issue.

If you aren't doing that or the issue is still occurring, please zip and attach the scene file here or via dropbox/google drive or another file sharing program so we can take a look at it.

Apologies! It is a very low poly object so that isn't the issue, it looks like it's most likely down to my graphics card (which is built in due to it being a laptop) I am still having the issue, but this is most likely just down to my laptop. The move, scale, and Rotate functions are also currently not working now, which I think may be a 2018 issue so I have switched back to 2017

Hi @Anonymous

When you get a chance, can you please post your laptops hardware specs so I can see if there are any issues that might be causing this memory error?

Steps to find your pc specs can be found here!

Hi @Anonymous

What are you using for a GPU?

Also, does this happen in an empty scene with Maya or a specific scene?

Let me know if anything changes!

Hi @Anonymous and welcome to the community!

If you open the start menu and type Device Manager then navigate to Display Adapters you can see what your GPU is. You can then Right Click the GPU and select 'Properties' and select the Driver tab to see the driver version.

When you get a chance, please let me know what GPU you have and what version!
