Mash Not Working after Maya 2018 update 3

Just downloaded the new Maya 2018 update and Mash is not working. When I try to access the Mash tab none of the icons pop up. I have to start a new scene, the icons generate but they wont work. I am trying to recreate this particle glow with curve connections in this video. After the initial setup of creating an emitter with particles, I want to establish a connection between point using Mash Trails but it doesn't create connections.

If you skip to this video on this time (3:40) you can see what I am talking about. He selects the particles, and connects them with Mash trails and he gets visible geometry when changing from "trails mode" to "connect to nearest". When he increases max trails and count he gets more geometry showing up. I dont get any of that.

Really need something on this guys. Would appreciate any feedback on this.

Hi @luis_alcala

You may want to unload and reload the MASH plug-in.

You can find this under Windows->Settings/Prefs->Plug-in Manager.

If that doesn't work you may want to try deleting your settings/preferences.

Please let me know if this helps or if you need any more assistance!

Well I unloaded and reloaded the Mash plugin, didn't work. I deleted my settings and prefs folder and nothing on the Mash Trails is working. What is the recommendation you have? I would really hate to do a complete reinstall since I have phoenix, stitch, vray and other plugins and settings installed.

Hi @luis_alcala

Hmmm ok.

When you get a chance can you please post a video of this issue happening on your machine? I'd like to see specifically how MASH isn't loading and/or what may be going wrong.

If you need a video capturing program, Screencast is a great option that we use here at Autodesk

Let me know if anything changes!

Heres a video of what I am talking about. After I make static points with the emitter and try to use Mash Trails and connect them to nearest, nothing happens.

Hi @luis_alcala

Thanks for attaching the video!

I was able to confirm that this is an issue with Update 3 so I attached your video to the report with our dev team so they can take a look at it and work on a fix and/or let me know if there is a workaround for this issue with update 3.

Nice man. Is there a way to go back to service pack 2? Also, I keep getting this error when I change between render engines or accessing the Vray render settings:

Error: file: C:/Program Files/Autodesk/Maya2018/scripts/others/createMayaSoftwareCommonGlobalsTab.mel line 36: setParent: Object 'commonTabColumn' not found. //

# Error: line 1: RuntimeError: file C:\solidangle\mtoadeploy\2018\scripts\mtoa\cmds\registerArnoldRenderer.py line 123: Error occurred during execution of MEL script

file: C:/Program Files/Autodesk/Maya2018/scripts/others/createMayaSoftwareCommonGlobalsTab.mel line 36: setParent: Object 'commonTabColumn' not found. #

Hi @luis_alcala

I'm actually looking into that right now.

Previously you would go to Control Panel and filter via updates and you could remove the specific update.

However I looked and there's no list for any of Maya 2018 updates which might be because we changed how installing/updating works for Maya.

I'm waiting to hear back from the developers on this but if you're in a rush to work you could fully uninstall/reinstall Maya 2018 and just be sure to not install Update 3.

Hi @luis_alcala

You could go to: C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Maya2018\Setup\setup.exe and run the setup file which will then prompt you to uninstall!

Please let me know if this helps or if you need any more assistance!

Is there any update on this?

I'm on update 4 and have the exact same problem.

Do I need to make a new thread on this? The problem is still there on version 4 and I can't afford to go back to update 2

I'm not sure why this is marked as solved.

Hi,

I tested your tutorial and maybe the workflow has changed. Quite strange, why this worked before!

But I learned you need at first to connect the nParticles with the MASH network.

Here is my solution:

- create manually MASH network (click on waiter)

- select nParticles first, then MASH node in the outliner

- go to MASH > Utilities > connect nParticles to Mesh

- and now create the desired trails node and that's it
