GPU tested vs certified

Hi,
So I'm trying to buy a new laptop. Around $1300, specifically to run Maya 2017. I keep looking at the gpu requirements for Maya, and I'm wondering what the difference is between a tested and certified GPU in terms of Maya using it.

Hi @Anonymous tested they've tested running Maya on it and get whatever results they get that vary per card. Certified means it 100% will run Maya. Maya can actually run on some very basic cards and even integrated graphics however the performance will vary depending on the power of your card, processor etc. If you wanted to post the specs of the computer you're looking into I'd be happy to tell you what you can expect. This is also a list of our certified hardware for Maya 2017. I use an HP Omen with a NVIDIA N16P-GX (GeForce GTX 960M) 2GB and it runs Maya fine. Granted if you are going to do any heavy visual effects or rendering you will want a more powerful machine. Let me know if this was helpful for what you are looking for.

I have a similar question. I'm researching laptops for my son who attends San Jose State this fall in the animation program. Sales on New Egg have laptops with the needed RAM, CPU, HDD or SSD, resolution - but the GPUs are always off by a bit on serial numbers: Radeon RX 460 instead of 480, GTX 1050 vs 1060. How important is this?? Will I be inviting problems if I don't get the exact serial number?

Hi @damaggio sorry for such a delayed response!

    Basically, we can't test every card to be certified and while I'm not 100% sure on the process I believe we test the most used/popular cards at the time and then test/update the list as new updates for Maya and new cards are released

    The number change you're talking about usually refers to the type of card and how much memory it has i.e 4GB vs 8GB. If your son is going to be working with Maya doing animation etc I would recommend any card with 4GB or more of memory. He would only need more than that if he's doing very complex work which would be a few years in to university.
