Combine animations?

Hi, me and a friend want to make a short animation about a fight between Lego Batman and Lego Superman.

We have both models rigged.

I was wonderring if it's possible to make the animations separatedly for every characters.(like an animation for batman punching and  one for superman taking a puch).

If this is not the best aproach, how can we do the entire animation?

I have attached o screen of our models. Any advices of making the background?(tutorials, links, etc)

I must say that we are begginers!

It's probably best that you animate them at the same time in the same scene.  Try making a storyboard of what you want to have happen.  You could do this in 3D by just posing your models in different shots, or by making rough drawings.  Time those out to get the overall feel and make sure that it's reading and making sense.  Try and keep it simple and to the point!  This will also help you figure out what you need for backgrounds etc.  If you both want to animate you could then split up the shots and both do animation on different shots.  Sounds like a fun project, good luck!
