removing a reapplying a constraint

Excuse the newb question...very long time Softimage user.

So I make a constraint. I don't like it. I remove it as I want to repostion the constrained object. I go to reapply the constraint and it won't key...even if I break the connection and reapply. I have to restart Maya to make the new connection work. This a bug or a feature? Spoiled in Softimage as we could adjust constraints after the fact without having to delete it.

Go to the edit tab and go down to un-parent while the child is selected.

unparent the constraint? I tried that and it crashed Maya. I can't unparent the controler as it's part of a referenced rig.

Try deleting the history to the model also go to Edit>delete by> constraints
