I don't know how it is possible to occur but one guess would be an assembly is referencing itself (a child [top level] or a child of a child [several level apart]).

I had the same problem yesterday, but I figured it out what my problem was.

In the assembly, i had 3 different assemblies, and one of them had the same name as the main assembly.

e.g

Main assembly : 1001
1. assembly: 6001

2. assembly: 6002

3. assembly: 1001

When I saved my main assembly as "1001", inventor tried to open the main assembly where my 3. assembly should have been. And thats why my 3. assembly had "cyclic reference".

As soon as I changed the name of my main assembly, or my 3. assembly, it worked as it should 🙂
