Display component origin planes on mouseover when holding CTRL-button

Display component origin planes on mouseover when holding CTRL-button

I prefer to create constraints on the origin planes of components.

I think it would be a great enhancement if the origin planes of a component will become temporarily visible and selectable by mouseover the component in combination with (for example) the CTRL-key.

When working at the assembly level. When you have turned the visibility of all work features off with the globe check box you need to be able to turn on origin or work plans individually.

For example: When modifying a 3D sketch at the assembly level to place a dimension to a origin or work plane they have to be visible. It would be very helpful to just turn on the planes with in that part not every plane in the assembly and all planes in the parts and sub assemblies.

Less confusion is good...

Constraining the origin planes of two parts together requires a lot of clicking and scrolling in the browser bar, particularly if the list of parts is long.  Then when I find the origin planes for a part, I end up highlighting each one until I figure out which plane I need.  I don't want to spend extra seconds digging for the plane I want in the browser bar.  Constraining origin planes together is a super important operation - please make it faster!

What I want is a really fast way to make origin planes for the pertinent parts visible / invisible.

1) I multi-select the two parts I'm about to constraint

2) I use a new command to make the origin planes and axes visible for only the selected parts (via keyboard shortcut)

3) I constrain two planes or axes together

4a) I hit a keyboard shortcut to make the origin planes and axes invisible for those two parts invisible again.

4b) OR, the origin planes/axes automatically become invisible after the constraint is created.

Right now, when you hover over a component pattern, there's no way to open up the component that is patterned unless you go over to the model tree and select it from there because said component is a child of the pattern.  Well, wouldn't it be nice if you could press the ctrl or shift key while hovering over the highlighted pattern and it automatically filters down one level to highlight the component that is patterned instead of the pattern itself.  Maybe the use of the scroll wheel could also be used to filter down further to nested children.  I think it would speed up workflow to at least have the ability to select one level down using ctrl or shift key.  It not only could be used in patterns, but also in subassemblies and weldments as well.  Workflow is key and I think this would speed up the selection process.

Yes yes yes! I almost posted this exact idea myself, I'm so glad I'm not the only one that thinks it's a good idea. I think the ability to hover and hold CTRL or SHIFT and then scroll to filter down each level would be FANTASTIC.

This would finally eliminate the need for me to peruse through the browser tree dozens of times a day just to find an assembly that I'm already looking at in the graphics window and could easily click with this filter-down selection.

I wish I could give this five or ten kudos...

Thanks a bunch DRoam.  I mean, I use shift to select and deselect things in Autocad constantly....as well as shift between trim mode and extend mode in both Autocad and Inventor.   Seems like a no brainer to bring that simple keyboard modifier philosophy to selection....especially with patterns.  That browser component treasure hunt is a game I dislike playing as much as I'm required to play it.  It seems so simple.

Haha, yes, treasure hunt is a good way to put it. Except treasure hunts are fun.

But I fully agree, Shift+Scroll would be perfect. With each scroll the pre-selection trickles down a level whether it be a Pattern or Assembly, all the way down to the part the cursor is pointing to if desired.

Say I want to select an assembly that's not at the top level of my current assembly. What if instead of the current digging we have to do, like this:

Pre-select Old Way.png

What if instead, we could use something like CTRL+Scroll or Shift+Scroll to "trickle" through the levels of the pre-selected assembly or pattern, like this:

Pre-select New Way.png

This would make getting at the different components within an assembly much easier!

Note: This is a duplicate of an existing idea, but I think the existing one isn't getting the attention it deserves because the description is a little vague. All,

I've posted a duplicate of this idea with a more descriptive heading and some pics to convey the idea, hoping it will get some more attention. Continue to give kudos here, and please visit this one and give it kudos as well. Thanks! URL: http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-ideastation/keyboard-scroll-to-quot-probe-quot-through-assemb...

Awesome job DRoam.  I appreciate you bringing some visuality to the idea.  Let's hope we see it in the future releases of Inventor.

Thanks, @Anonymous. Still not getting the attention I'd hoped Smiley Sad Maybe it's just us, but I can't help but think if the word got out more and the idea were easier to communicate, then other Inventor users would jump on it. Just not sure how to spread the word better. Oh well, maybe it'll catch on eventually 🙂

Yeah, hopefully it will catch on.  Thanks again for everything.  Hey, incidentally, do you know of a way to update the model tree names of components / parts in an assembly to reflect thier part number or file name data in the iproperties in a batched process?  Boy, that would be awesome.

Just so happens I think I can help there! I believe the following command should do what you want:

DRoam,

Hey one more question if you don't mind.  Is there any way to push the description data from iProperties to windows explorer so that these properties can be viewed within explorer itselff.  I tried making the "description" column active but it won't display anything.  Do you know if this functionanlity even exists?  Thanks man!!

So as not to clutter the IdeaStation entry, I made a post for this in the Inventor General Discussion area, it's located here: Viewing iProperties in Windows Explorer

Feel free to ask any other questions in the General Discussion area 🙂 not a big deal asking them here, it just helps to keep the discussion focused on the original idea so it doesn't get cluttered 🙂

Okie doke.  Thanks again!

Just as an additional thought, this pre-selection functionality would essentially function exactly the same as if you were hovering over various sub-components in the browser tree. It's not doing anything super new or complicated--it's just doing what we can already do but within the graphics window. That small difference just happens to save quite a lot of time and effort.

One of Inventor's big strengths is the push towards making it a more model-centric program, where you're always focused on your model, rather than button-centric where you're always looking at toolbars and the browser tree. This is a big step in that same direction.

Would it work something like Shift Right Click > Part Priority?
