Improve the sketch-paste action to allow control of insert position

Improve the sketch-paste action to allow control of insert position

Currently, when you copy and paste sketch geometry, the pasted geometry is inserted slightly offset from the original copied geometry.

Inventor_Sketch_Copy-Paste_Behavior.gif

Regardless of where you right-click, the pasted geometry continues to insert offset from the previous geometry.

This can make it difficult to work with the new geometry.

Please allow the user to control the insert position when pasting sketch geometry. I would expect similar behavior to the copy-paste workflow for components in an Inventor assembly or that of AutoCAD.

If you think this would be of benefit, I would welcome votes from the community.

Jerry

@JBerns OMG - yes!! It drives me crazy that copying and pasting parts within the assembly environment does exactly what you suggest here - but not in the sketch environment.

That's crazy talk, why would we want our lives easier?  What are you some sort of masochist?! 😉

Yes that would be very helpful.

@Yijiang.Cai Thank you for the update - glad it's being considered!

I have a crude workaround:

Copy the geometry.

Create new part and then a new sketch.

Paste the geometry.

MOVE or drag the geometry away from its pasted position by at least its width/height.

This results in new coordinates for the geometry.

Copy the newly pasted/moved geometry. This will get the new position/coordinates.

Return to the original part sketch and then paste.

The geometry should be offset by the distance you moved in the step above.

Optionally, convert the geometry to a block.

Insert a new block into the sketch.

Move and then explode.

Purge unused sketch blocks.

Hope this helps in the interim until Autodesk implements.

Jerry

This idea has been implemented within Autodesk Inventor 2023.2. Please review the Inventor 2023.2 What's New article here, for more information regarding how paste operations adhere to cursor locations. Special thanks to everyone who cast a vote for it.
