Hole Tables

Hole Tables

It is my opinion that the Hole Table feature in Inventor works great for simple applications, but it lacks flexibility for more complex Hole Table creation and does not support legacy drawing needs. Below is the “Edit Hole Table” dialog box that I would hope to see after the Hole Table is created and placed. Each number is explained below the image and for some, there are links to other "Ideas" within the Ideastation.

EditHoleTableNEW.JPG

1)Character Exclude

The character exclude option needs to be tied directly to the Hole Table. When the table is first created, it can draw the exclusions from the active style. But after the table is created, there is no way to make an existing Hole table skip a letter that was not added to the active style’s character exclusions. (You can reorder things manually, but when there’s 200 holes to re-tag…)

This feature would be extremely useful for creating frames that have common holes but differ slightly from each other. Creating two drawings with very similar hole patterns with mismatching holes just creates headaches at the machine shop, especially when the frames need to be machined in pairs.

2) Lock Hole Table

This feature would be different than preserve tagging. You can read about “Preserve Tagging” here. The Lock Hole Table option means that the Hole Tags will NEVER change, no matter what, regardless of sorting option. Until this option is unchecked, the tags will remain as they did when the table was locked. So if there are holes B1 through B12, and holes B2, B7 and B8 are removed (either in the model or tag deleted in drawing), the table would read B1, B3, B4, B5, B6, B9, B10, B11, B12. If an additional B hole was added, it would be B13. Additionally, if all of the B holes were deleted the table would proceed without B holes: A, C, D,…etc. If a new hole was added, regardless of how the table is sorted, the new hole would be added to the end of the hole table.

This feature is needed in order to maintain legacy drawings.

3) Custom Order Selection

When a hole table is initially created using the Hole Table – Selection tool, it allows you to select the holes you want and will order similar holes in the order that they were clicked. This function is nice because allows you to pick the order in which you want the table arranged. However, if the table is originally created based on size or position, there is no good way to reorder your selection. It is possible to change the tags manually and then resort the table, but I feel like there could be a better method.

The custom order selection tool would allow users to pick the order of the holes as they exist in the previously created table. I imagine it functioning a lot like a manual renumbering of a Structured Bill of Material.

bomfunction.JPG

But instead of numbers, you would restructure the holes using letters. If different holes have the same letter, it would appear yellow and not allow you to continue until all dissimilar holes had different letters. If you expanded a particular hole, you would be able to renumber all of the B holes in the same manner.

4) Do Not Sort

Once a Hole table has been created without using the individual hole selection tool, the view will always be sorted by either position or size. This causes many issues for drawings that were released and then need to get revised.

  • If a 9/16 thru hole previously tagged “D” was manually changed to “E” and then another 9/16 thru hole was added to the model, that new hole would come in as a D hole and not an E hole.
  • Once a tag has been altered, the table must be resorted in order for the table to appear in the correct order (A1, A2, A3..., A10, B1, B2, B3,… etc.). However if any change is made to the table (Edit Hole Table), the table will immediately scramble back to its original arrangement. The table must then be resorted again to correct the scramble.

Having a Do Not Sort toggle would be very helpful to avoid these issues when a previous hole table made to be sorted by position or size has to be modified. Do Not Sort would not affect the right-click->Table->Resort function, it would just remove the previous arrangement specification for future hole table modifications. The table would then remain as it had after the toggle was turned off and be sorted only by the tags already applied to the hole. Any new holes added would be added to the end of the table, and any new holes similar to existing holes would be appended to the end of their corresponding letter.

The Do Not Sort and the Lock Hole Table toggles are very similar, but I still think it is important to have both.

 5) Currently, Arrange by position, arranges by YDIM first and XDIM second. How about adding the option to arrange by XDIM first and YDIM second? Hole depth? Maybe a drop down box to select from the choices?

 6) Allowing Hole Tables to pick up slots could be useful, but I have personally not needed this yet.

7) Currently, the XDIM and YDIM columns in a Hole Table are not accessible to the user. We can change the precision, but it is sometimes important to be able to access these dimensions for a number of reasons. We would like to be able to access individual XDIM and YDIM values in order to apply tolerances, or write in descriptive text. Please see links for details.

8)The height of a row in the table cannot be specified after the table is placed. (It can only be dragged.)

When adding more than one hole table to a drawing, the second and subsquent hole tables hole prefix letters should follow on from the last hole table added.

Therefore Hole Table 1 as letter A to C

Then Hole Table 2 starts from D to

And so on ...

Second to the post -- http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/Inventor-General/Hole-Table-Numbering/m-p/4712637/highlight/true#M4926... One hydraulic customer also hope Inventor to support continuous numbring style across multiple hole tables, meanwhile, they hope it will support to reserve some numbers and not be consumed by others, since some holes have been deleted but these numbers have been used on legacy drawing, they don't want to make shopfloor confused.

we have another customer with the exact same request. placement of multiple hole tables on the same sheet results in them having to manually retag every extra table that is added so that you do not get dupliate A1, A2 etc.

The standard table allows for data sorting based on the column selection, it has it's own "sort" icon.  When you select the hole table function, it will not allow for data sorting, only the "hole" property is used to sort the data.  For products with a variety of hole sizes and/or parts with dozens of holes, having the opportunity to sort on the x-dim or y-dim or hole depth would be helpful.  Please consider incorporating this feature into the hole table.

Great idea Alex!

What about the holes tolerances, if different in between the different hole sizes? I know there are some limitations right now.

Cheers,

Adrian

Sorry for not getting back to you Adrian. I thought I had email notifications on for the thread, but maybe I just missed it.

In regards to the different tolerances, I believe Inventor already can accomplish what you are asking. I am assuming that you want to have different tolerances on different holes? Double-click the Hole Note (Edit Hole Note) in the Hole table you want to set the tolerance on. Click on precision and tolerance. Set to Use Part Tolerance. Go to the model. Edit the Hole Feature. Find the dimension you want toleranced. Click the arrow next to the dimension. Click Tolerance. You'll then find a window similar to the tolerance window on IDWs.

ResponseTolerance.JPG

ResponseTolerance1.jpg

Also, if you edit the hole note in any way, it should change the tag of the hole as different from the others.

I do think there should be a whole new way of doing hole tables in general though.

Thanks,

Alex

Hi Alex,

Thank you for your feedback, I did check what you said and it now works fine.

The only draw-back I found was that you have to click one dimension at the time and bring the tolerance defined at the part level. So, it will be nice to be able to do it for all dimensions in the Hole Table at once (get the “Use Part Tolerance”).Hole-Table-Tolerance.JPG

Take care,

Adrian

I agree 100%.

I don't know how comfortable you are with modifying styles in the Styles Library, but I believe if you go to the Styles Library and change your active style to always include Part Tolerences for Hole Notes, it will save you a couple clicks. However, you'll still have to got to each hole feature and set the tolerance in the part...

ResponseTolerance2.JPG

Basically, Inventor wants you to make as many clicks as possible. Smiley Frustrated

Thanks for the kudos!

Also there needs to be an option to set the distance table line are from the text within the table.

Currently the lines in the table are to close to the text IMO.

I have to modify the spacing through VBA.

I would like to be able to select and edit multiple tags from a hole table in a drawing. Right now there is no way to select multiple tags and make the font bigger or smaller, at least not that I know.

Thanks

At present there is no option to sort the hole table based on X dim. It would be helpful if the hole table can be sorted with hole feature properties like hole name, hole size or sorting by X dim.

How about adding a toggle to remove the XY coords and select holes in multiple views on one table.

@jeffsteiger6735 You currently have the ability to remove the XDIM and YDIM columns using the "Column Chooser", but the multi-view hole table is definitely a need. That is number 9 on the list. Thanks for the Kudos!

Recently there's been a few more Hole Table ideas that currently address issues I didn't cover in my original idea. Those ideas can be found at the following links:

Similar to number 10 on the list and a known issue: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-ideas/hole-tables/idi-p/6900448

Axis orientation to avoid negative values (specify +X and +Y axes regardless of orgin location) : https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-ideas/hole-tables/idc-p/6985515#M17751

Another idea to make the XDIM and YDIM values individually accessible (number 7 on the list): https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-ideas/hole-table-select-multiple-holes-at-once-and-then-over...

Three columns related to fasteners are able to be added to a Hole Table, yet currently do not do anything: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-ideas/fastener-information-in-a-hole-table/idi-p/6663133

I will continue to update this post as new issues come up.

Also agree 100% with the suggestions made in this idea, I've just spent about 15-20 minutes manually setting individual row heights in a table to get everything to fit on a sheet clearly.

Solidworks uses excel functionality on the right mouse button to set row height for the entire table or selected rows using excel functionality ...

Allow the hole table ID tags to have the "new" box outline around the text exactly like in leader and text annotation.

I recently post an issue on the support forum. As they have no solution for it, it has been suggest to post it on the ideas forums. Your post is great and I would like to add this problem:

Tags arrows example.JPGEverytime we do a hole table in a drawing, when the tag is on a threaded hole, depending where the arrow is on the thread circle, it goes accross the center of the hole to go to the opposite side of it. And not on the thread circle, but really the diameter of the hole, as you can see. For a part with a lot of thread holes, it quickly becomes unreadable.

ideally I want one table for multiple views.

This has been a question asked to Autodesk since 2005 and probably earlier - shame they don't want to listen!

One thing that really is killing me in the hole table is when you add tolerancing to the description it doesn't follow the dimension style but sticks to the text style.

Quick example:

Table.png

Ideally I'd like the hole table to match the dimension style with the smaller text. Right now if the tolerance is symmetric we can use that as a work around but it would be strongly preferable to match the dim style.

Also, I really would like to be able to set a standardized row height.
