Hole Tables

Hole Tables

The company I work for manufactures machine frames which include a number of large aluminium plates. The plates contain blind holes on both sides of the plate, and through holes. Due to the amount of holes on the plate the drawing will require front and rear views of the plate, with each view having its own hole table.

It would be useful if:-

  • You could rotate the axes around X or Y (in the same way that you can rotate the UCS in AutoCAD) so that the hole co-ordinates of the front and rear views are in the same direction.
  • An axis identifier rather than the basic origin indicator was available. Maybe the origin indicator could be a selectable type?
  • Through holes are only included on one views holes table, maybe based on the side their sketch was created on. (Inventor knows when dimensions have been retrieved, why not holes in table)
  • The hole tags would continue on across the views preventing confusion. i.e if one particular hole size ended at A14 of the front table, the same size hole would start on the other table at A15.
  • Easily add geometric tolerances to holes in a table.

I didn't want to add these to https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-ideas/hole-tables/idi-p/5553918 which includes a lot of good ideas for hole table improvements.

Thanks for linking my idea Dave! If you haven't yet, make sure to give it an up-vote so we can get these hole tables fixed!

I love the rotating axes idea.

Could you expand on what you mean by axis identifier? I'm thinking you mean specify the x-axis and y-axis on every view. (Good idea)

I'm not sure what you mean by "Through holes are only included on one views holes table." It would make sense to me that that a thru hole that is called out on the Front side hole table would not be called out on the Back side hole table unless there was say another operation performed on that hole like a pipe tap from both sides. Otherwise, you have an over constrained hole location (but maybe that's what you want, I'm always for more flexibility)

Hole tags across multiple views would be great. I'd even add to this and say that specifying where you want the hole tag to start would be even better. Let's say view 1 has A-holes from A1 to A6, but you're not sure if you may need to add more A-holes in the future so your next view's hole table would continue from A20 to A26 and so on.

I believe that geometric tolerancing of hole locations is number 7 on my list.

Thanks for recognizing that hole tables need some work!

Thanks for the response.

Regarding the axis identifier, I have created a symbol which I manually add to show which is +X and +Y on the drawing. This could replace, or be used in place of the default origin indicator. This would then rotate to correspond to the hole table direction. Perhaps it could be done in a dialog box when the origin indicator is placed.

What you say regarding the through holes is what I was thinking, in the the hole would only be called out on the front side hole table, and not on the back.

The axis identifier is a great idea. I see that you noted that positive (+) X and Y directions and I agree that it is necessary to be able to specify the axis orientation. It's come up multiple times where the orgin on a view causes negative X or Y dimensions to be charted and more often than not, the orgin is in a location such that only negative values are given thus making the need to show the negative values unnecessary. I thought that the could also be accomplished by having access to the XDIM and YDIM values, but I like having the axis identifier idea better.

I didn't realize that Inventor already did call out through holes twice on different hole tables. Hopefully they can add check box that specifies whether or not to call out through holes that are already called out on other hole tables. This is opposite of this problem: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-ideas/hole-tables/idi-p/6900448. Oh the irony.
