Specialized BOM

I want to set up a BOM style to speed up submittal drawings for steel tanks. The new BOM would have Item (lettered), Size (from iproperties "AUTHORITY"), and Description (Manually entered) So it would show up like this;

Is there a way to get the item default set to letters instead of numbers?

How can I keep identical parts from merging? With a regular BOM, B and C would merge and say QTY of 2.

To get Alpha numbering in BOM do the following:

RMB on the Parts Only tab and enable it, then RMB again and go to View 
Properties. Change numbering to Alpha.
Then hit Renumber on the BOM toolbar, and start with A (there seems to be an 
issue here with how we default in the renumber dialog, just make sure to 
change the 1 to A).

If your parts lists numbers are not already overwritten (typically a 
migrated file) all parts lists associated with that assembly will update.

Note that if know that you ALWAYS want alpha IDs, change that setting in 
your assembly template so you won't have to renumber.

to keep the rows of B & C from merging, the part # under the project tab in the iproperties have to be different, from my experience

I don't want to change assembly settings because I still need to make a weld drawing with integer numbering

Save two different drawing templates.  One for Assemblies and one for Weldments.

Did a test and I've managed to change it wit iLogic but you face a bigger problem.

How are you going to synchronize this on multiple sheets, drawings? to make them consistent?

Make it as a custom iProperty in the component level. Get the PartsList to show this custom property (that will be the alpha numbering) that corresponds to the part, instead of the Item Number.

Thought about another approach. I could use the Item # as the description but I still have a problem with combining occurrences of the same part.

The real end goal is to get inventor to generate sizes without just using leader text. About a month ago someone sent out a submital with the wrong fitting called out even though it was the correct size on the model, and on the BOM, and built by the weldshop, the customer wanted to back charge because it was different than approved.
