Sketching T&T

Ever since the beginning of the universe, Inv has had a problem identifying
user lines as opposed to projected lines. In particular Inv can have a "duck
fit" when it tries to apply a Coincident constraint to a projected line.

Until Adsk give us the option of having Reference Construction & Reference
Centre lines instead of just having Reference Normal lines, we as users will
continue to have a problem.

I have one solution that works for me.

Turn off Auto Projection.

When you want to project geometry make sure that you have first selected
Construction.

You'll have to describe to complete region with a Normal line - from which
you want to make a feature - but you'll find that Inv can now tell the
difference between Normal and Reference a lot easier.

As far as I know you can turn any sketch geometry (normal, projected or auto-projected, adaptive or non) into construction and/or centerline geometry using the toggle buttons.

You can also change the individual elements of derived sketches to construction (or centerline), which I find very handy when using a single master sketch to define the geometry of several related parts.

See "Linetype of sketch geometry" in Help.

There are only four linetypes; Normal, Construction, Centerline & Reference.

"Reference
If your sketch is projected from a part edge, it is automatically assigned
a Reference linetype. Reference geometry is associative so that if the part
face it is associated with is modified, the reference geometry automatically
updates.


If you change reference geometry to another linetype it loses its
associativity."


The current Reference linetype is seen by Inv as being like the Normal
linetype when creating features.

I'd like to see Options of; Ref Normal, Ref Construction & Ref Centreline
with a default of Ref Construction.

I've already submitted this as a Wish.

In the meantime I'll continue to recommend my T&T.

Hi Duncan,

I'm using IV2008, and the help reads as you quoted, but it is wrong when it says "If you change reference geometry to another linetype it loses its associativity". (maybe a holdover from earlier verions?)
As I said, you can change projected geometry to construction or centerline style, and it will maintain its associativity.
Help is also rather misleading when it refers to a reference 'linetype', as reference status is denoted by color rather than linetype.

It was Subscription Support that pointed me to that reference in the Help
... !

I would still like the default, for projected geometry to be Construction
(Ref)
