Rotating objects in a sketch around the sketch centre

Hi All,

Inventor 2019-R4.6

The problem I have is this.  I have a sketch and I want to rotate it around the axis center point but all I get is an error message "The selected geometry could not be rotated. Check constraint settings for sketch edit tools".

I've tried looking this up but still cannot get the rotation to work.

Any help in this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi! Usually, it is about constraints and dimensions. Some of them might prevent such rotation from happening. I would suggest you turn some sketch geometry into a sketch block, instead of individual lines.  You can enable Layout tools by right-clicking on Sketch ribbon -> Show Panels -> check Layout. Create Sketch Block -> pick the lines of interest. Once they become a sketch block, they all move together as a rigid body.

Many thanks!

Hi Johnson,

Thanks for that now my sketch rotates easily in block format.

To get your sketch fully defined there 205 dimensions needed.

It appears - you are using Inventor as AutoCAD LT.

Is this project of yours just for you or do you work for someone else?

Cheers,

Igor.

Hi Igor,

I'm using Inventor 2019 R4-6.  This sketch is just for me, one of 16 tables for my model railway layout.  I did go and add ALL dimensions etc., but it still would not rotate for me.  I also removed all dimensions to see if that would work - no, still errored.

Hi Dave;

As Johnson have suggested - use a block tool to rotate a sketch. In your case - it will be a quickest option.

But if all you need is a layout for your model - I would suggest - you look into AutoCAD. In there you still can create a pretty decent 3D model and manipulate geometry will be easier. But if you want to use Inventor - it is fine too. 🙂

Cheers;

Igor.
