repeating holes in a sphere

Hi all, 

I need to make 1600 holes in a sphere as a 3D printing project. The job is essentially a hollow sphere with with tons of holes perpindicular to the surface in a repeating pattern, but I dont know how to get these kinds of holes, nor how to get a cirular repeating pattern going to even start. I've been able to make a hollow sphere, but dont know how to go from here. 

Any help would be appricated.

So far I took two half circles and revolved them around a center axis for a hollow sphere with a small wall thickness

I wish I knew how they plan to pattern the holes.

I got 1570 and a couple of attempts just below there and some over 1700 ... I think I might have an idea for how to do get exactly 1600 but it might not work (and I may have to fiddle with my elements)

Doing it this way I can also easily count how many holes there are. I was going to post is derived into one part but it was 18 meg and 17 meg zipped.

Here I tried to get rid of the straight line of holes.

(If you do the Free Orbit with Shift to spin one of these, at certain speeds it will mess with your mind.)
