Offset bug in Inventor 2017

When I try and offset geometry, I select the line and then type in the amount I want to offset it:

When I press enter to accept the number I typed in, I instead get a completely different number:

I haven't seen this problem yet in my Inventor.

Can you upload the model so I can take a look at it.

It does it with every model.

I've worked out what triggers it.

If you have snap to grid on, the offset line will neither snap to the grid or accept the user input number.

I have the same bug in v2018 pro. It gives you a different dimension then what I type. You have to click on it and it will change to the number you entered.

@SharkDesign and @goddardr  I have created a video below trying to reproduce this issue.  Can you take a look and let me know if I am missing something in your workflow?  I tried this in 2018 RTM and am not seeing the issue.  If you can record your workflow that can help us reproduce it on our side so we can send it to our development team.

Thanks,

@SharkDesign

Hi, @kgilham just showed this to me and from what we were playing around with it IS snapping to the grid location.

In his example he offset by .25 and it placed it .256 away, if I used the mouse to try to offset without typing in a value it snapped to the same .256 location. So I am deducing that the snap to grid option is overriding the value you typed in.

Now I can see where this might appear to be a bug and I could be convinced that perhaps it should NOT work this way but in my opinion this is an over constrained situation. You are asking us to snap to grid and put it at a value that is not on the grid, which wins?

I can be convinced that snap to grid should work for mouse clicking and not "precise" input but that is not the way it has been working probably since the dawn of Inventor is my guess.

I would also be concerned that some users might be relying on this, i.e. snap it to the grid that is closest to .25, I can see some value in that workflow perhaps.

Now as an individual developer it is not my decision to change this behavior either way without factoring in the "other side" of the equation.

Kyle is going to escalate this with our team to see if changing this is a good thing for the majority of our users.

Thanks for bringing it to our attention assuming we have correctly identified what you are seeing.

I don't agree with that because when you click on the value it changes to
the number you typed in rather than the snapped value. This behaviour
doesn't make sense.

@SharkDesign

I missed that until another person here showed that to me... I agree with you that we are inconsistent there. The snap to grid wins... only on forward create not on edit dimension value.

I would expect we will come around to changing this to make precise input (on forward create or edit) wins out over snap to grid but we need to do our due diligence on this first to make sure we don't adversely affect another set of users.

Thanks for the continued dialogue.

Well if you have snap to grid on, the current behaviour is that it shows the dimension to the next snap line. In this situation, clicking to edit dimension should should the exact same number.

Another issue comes when creating formulas. If I create a new dimension and click on one of these snapped dimensions in order to use that figure in the formula, it will enter the snapped dimension. Yet as we said before clicking on this dimension shows a rounded figure as entered by me. The formula will use the snapped dimension for calculation instead of the number I typed in.

You also end up with this very confusing parameter window where the equations do not match the nominal figures.

I really don't think this is a 'lets see how our users are using this feature,' this is just completely wrong whichever way you look at it and needs fixing.

I have the same thing happening. I thought Inventor people figured out a way to make offsetting geometry take more clicks!!

Hello James,

There is a problem about offset command, the value looks wrong when We offset the something value. We have received feedback from our customers regarding this issue. You can give vote for consideration.

I voted, but to me this shouldn't have to be in the new idea submission. It's clearly wrong and needs fixing.
