Newly created .idw file from a newly created .iam file will not save.

Autodesk Inventor Professional 2023 Build 359, release 2023.3
Autodesk Vault Professional 2023 Build 28.3.21.0
Windows 10 Pro

This is an issue we've seen numerous times.
  1. User creates a new assembly .iam file.
    • All parts saved and checked into Vault without error
  2. User saves and checks new .iam into Vault.
  3. New .idw file is created for the above .iam file.
    • Multiple views created
    • Dimensions applied
    • Bill of Materials added
    • Balloons applied
  4. User attempts to save new .idw file, to be met with inability to save file. No "Save" dialogue box will appear, not able to check in, no save functionality whatsoever. Users have attempted to copy the current .idw sheet into a new .idw file and have been successful in some cases, in other cases this attempt does not work. Users are forced to start a new .idw file and lose all prior work.
I have tried to search the internet for answers but can't seem to find any instances that are similar. I may be parsing my search in a way that isn't producing the results I am looking for.

Is this an issue that anyone here has seen before?

Didn't see that before.

I'm on IV2023.4 and Vault 28.4.20.0

Do you have addin/iLogic that trigger when save?

Can user save the drawing with 1 view?

Or no view after new?

Message 3 of 14

We have seen this happen across multiple releases.

  • Do you have addin/iLogic that trigger when save?
    • Someone in the past did create iLogic that performs a "zoom all" prior to save. No other "Before Save Document" triggers exist.
  • Can user save the drawing with 1 view?
    • The number of views has never been scrutinized when this error or bug occurs.
  • Or no view after new?
    • I am unsure what you mean here.

Save a new drawing with the correct filename without adding anything.

When the bug occurs, it doesn't permit the user to save at all.

Even with a new empty drawing?

Can part or assembly be save?

Only Save doesn't work?

Everything else works?

Message 7 of 14

The Save Icons still available when the bug occurs?

Even with a new empty drawing?

  • we don't save "empty" drawings. Our drawing names get populated when we bring in the .ipt or .iam, as the drawing will have the same name as the model, so I am unable to answer this.

Can part or assembly be save?

  • The .ipt or .iam can be saved and checked in; this appears to only happen with the .idw file, and only occasionally.

Only Save doesn't work? Everything else works?

  • Yes. Drawing views can be placed, BoM added, balloons added, section views, etc. It appears that all other functions happen properly. "Save" is the only issue.

Yes; save icons still appear. When clicked on, an error message appears (paraphrased): Drawing can not be saved.

Users have not supplied a screen shot but if it happens again, I will be sure to have them get a screen shot.

Ask user to save often, after each item is added.

See which item cause Save to fail.  See if the same item cause the problem.

Hence I ask to save an empty drawing.  If user can't even save a new drawing, no reason to keep working on it.

It's about finding where problem is.

User saving files on network drive?  Cloud drive?  Vault Workspace added to OneDrive?

Check the folder where the file is being save.  Are there .newver files?

Message 11 of 14

Our users save to a folder on their local PCs. There are no ".newver" files.

I can ASK users to save as soon as a file is created and that could happen in a perfect environment, but human error takes over and someone will forget to save immediately and already be well into the drawing creation process before the remember to save.

Of course if a user can't save a new drawing, it doesn't make sense to keep working on it. Nobody would do that purposefully.

Saving often also prevent losing everything.

The "Drawing cannot be saved" dialog might have more info on why file cannot be saved.

It might not say anything too.

Hi Troy,

I believe you have reported this behavior before. But so far we have not been able to reproduce it. I may have offered the same tips but I am really clueless at the moment. Try right-clicking on Inventor desktop icon -> Properties -> Compatibility -> check "Run as Admin."

Also try making the user admin and see if the behavior goes away.

Many thanks!

@johnsonshiue

I haven't reported this issue before. Its occurrence is rare but when it happens, it can really ruin someone's day.
