New Mesh Style for Rendering

Hi Guys & Gals,

Instead of modelling physical mesh I want to use a mesh render instead. Faster Basically.

I want similar to a standard Rectangular mesh within the Inventor already, Only I am after Mesh only 1" by 1"

I have tried copying and altering the rectangular render version but to no effect.

So I want to create my own version. I have generated a JPG of the mesh style, see image below.

But it is NOT see through like the standard Inventor Mesh. I notice the standard Inventor mesh has 3 images.

The mesh image, then the cutout image and then the Bump Image. All look similar. See screen shot image at the bottom.

Clearly I need to generate all 3 versions to achieve the see through effect.

So my question is this, How do I correctly alter my image to form the Cut out Image and Bump Image

to achieve the see through mesh render effect. What am I missing?

Your help much appreciated.

PS. Please explain in Layman's term 🙂

Ta Tony

The cut-out and bump maps function in a similar way.  Don't think of it as an image, think of it as an XY map of values, using the value of each pixel.  The value ranges between 0 (black) and 1 (white).  The bump map is a bit more obvious - 1 represents a raised surface, 0 represents a sunken surface, while a mid-level 0.5 is left as-is.  Note that this is only a visual effect, it never physically modifies the position of the surface.  And because it's a visual effect the apparent amount of change is very small compared with the object.  In other words, think ripples from rain drops not waves.

the time you spend will be well worth it.

The Bump isn't necessary to create your mesh, only the cutout.

What @dgorsman is basically saying is, the color defines what gets cut in a cutout or raised in a bumpmap.

For cutouts, black is what gets cut.

For bumpmaps, the amount of gray defines elevation. (black being low, white high)

I've attached a cutout map for you.
