Long Load time for Workspace files to "Open", "Save", or "Place Component"

Anyone know why it takes so long for it to load up the searchable files in my Workspace folder. See the screencast.

Yes, I have over 10,000 files in this folder, but so do my co-workers and they do not have this issue. It's been happening for a couple weeks now. I really don't want to go back through and do the "Delete Working Copies" thing, but I guess I will if people think this is happening just because I have too many files in one folder.

Thanks,

Alex

Hi! A few things to try. Go to Tools -> Application Options -> General -> uncheck "Show MyHome" on startup. Another one is on File tab -> uncheck "Enable Quick File Open." Does it work faster now?

Many thanks!

Hi Johnson,

I unchecked the home option but that had no effect. I couldn't find the fast open option under the file tab. Is that a new 2019 feature? We're still on 2018.

Thanks,

Alex

Alex,

When was the last time you restarted your machine?

What about house cleaning like doing a machine cleanup like defrag or disk cleanup.

It's definitely been awhile since I've done that kind of stuff. I'll do that here in a little bit when I shut down for the weekend. Thanks.

Hi Alex,

I was not sure what release you were on. "Enable Quick Open" option has been removed as of 2018. So, it should not be the cause. Do you access Material and Appearance Library through network?

Many thanks!

Hi! Another thing to check is to make sure 2018.3 update, all critical Windows update, and the latest graphics driver are installed.

Many thanks!

Hi again Johnson,

I did all of the suggested things and sadly it has not been fixed.

The Material and Appearance library is accessed via a shared folder that each user is pointed to on our network.

I installed 2018.3, but no change observed.

No Windows Updates were required.

The latest graphics drivers are installed.

@Cadmanto, thanks for your response. I did a defrag and a disk clean up and I restarted the PC. No change in function as of yet.

I'm thinking I will probably just have to do the "Delete Working Copies" check in procedure... unless anyone has any further ideas.

Thanks again.

Alex

I am not seeing anything in this thread regarding where your files are located.  You are using Vault, checking out on to the local?  Or a network drive?

If network, then maybe the network traffic might be the cause.

Files from our Vault are checked out and copied from the Vault to my local C drive. The files are being worked on in Inventor from the local copies on the C drive. This is the way all my users are doing this and they have no issues. Just me with the long load times. This is my Workspace folder with 12,047 items in it.

Is there a magic number I have to stay below?

Thanks,

Alex

Any dead shortcuts (lnk files) that might be in your folder paths that aren't in other folks?   Same for mapped or disconnected network paths.

Are you running any other programs in the background (anti-virus etc) that the others are not?

What I would do at this point is go to your task manager and under the performance tab, see what is sucking all of your resources.

Hello again everyone,

I know this is a bit late, but I'm still really hoping to solve this issue. It remains slow, and as I add more files, it seems to get slower. My coworkers continue to add files, and they continue to have no issues.

@kstate92 can you expand a little bit on what you meant by "mapped or disconnected network paths"? This workspace folder is on my C drive. Can it still be affected by the network? There are no lnk files in the Designs folder.

@Cadmanto I looked at the performance tab and when I click open, the CPU utilization spikes about 20%. See this Screencast. The sharp increase before the video started was the Screencast program starting.

In my Designs folder, I currently have 13,022 items.

I removed everything that wasn't an Inventor file: 12,695 items - no change, still slow.

I continued and removed all files except .iam and .ipt files (no drawings): 11,205 items - no change, still slow.

I continued and removed all .iam files (just .ipt files left): 8,603 items - slightly faster, but still slow (instead of waiting 12.5 seconds, I waited around 9 seconds)

I continued and removed 1/2 of the .ipt files: 4,883 items - faster, but still slow (instead of waiting 12.5 seconds, I waited 6 seconds)

I continued and removed all but 76 .ipt files - it worked as expected with little to no delay upon opening.

I opened the Designs folder with Windows explorer and it has no delay and functions as expected, however, trying to "Open" or "Place Component" in Inventor is a significant 12.5 second delay. [Searching for Autodesk Inventor Files (*.iam;*.dwg;*.idw;*.ipt;*.ipn;*.ide)]

When trying to "Open" a file in Word, it is instant. [Searching All Files (*.*)]

When trying to "Open" a file in AutoCAD Mechanical 2018, it is instant. [Searching Drawing (.dwg*)]

The problem definitely lies somewhere in Inventor because I am having no issues accessing the Designs folder on my C drive in any other program. Anyone else have any other thoughts? @johnsonshiue

Thanks again everyone.

Alex

Hi! A few things to check. Is Appearance and Material Library stored locally or on a network drive? Did you clean up %temp% folder? Have you installed 2018.3 update followed by 2018.3.2 update? Are all critical Windows updates installed? Try running Inventor as Admin (right-click on Inventor icon on desktop -> Run as Admin). Lastly, try unload all Inventor Add-Ins (Tools -> Add-Ins -> unload all Add-Ins -> restart Inventor).

I have a folder having 50K files and I am not seeing the behavior.

Many thanks!

Thanks for the reply Johnson.

In the following order:

Cleaned up temp

Installed 2018.3.3

Critical Windows Updates are installed. (none were required)

Run Inventor as Admin

Disabled all Add-Ins

None of the above fixed the issue. I also tried the following:

The Appearance and Material Library is not stored locally. It is on a shared drive so that all users can access each other's custom materials. Is this a problem? I used the Inventor Reset Utility (from this link's instructions) and reset my Inventor so that the Appearance and Material library would be pulled from the default location. When I opened Inventor back up after the reset, I clicked "Open" and navigated to the Designs folder (because it was not set by the Default Project) and I still got the 12.5 second delay upon selecting the Designs folder.

Not sure where to go from here. Thanks for the help.

Hi! I think having Appearance and Material library locally will give you the best performance. The issue is that the libraries have to check if the styles in the files to open are the same as the ones in the libraries. This check can drag down performance, particularly done over network.

To prove my theory, you can try move the libraries to local drive. I believe the Open and Save should be a lot faster. Next, after the files are open, go to Manage -> Styles Editor -> Purge -> remove all unused styles from the files -> Ok. You will need to save the change. Now Open and Save should be even faster than before.

Many thanks!

If this is the reason what will be the workaround to have the same materials saved and be able to work on the same models at different locations?

Maybe try to do this benchmark on your PC and a PC of your collueges? Compare both IPI scores...

Hi @seventhmoreno, are you also having this issue? As of now, it remains unresolved. My coworkers and I all have identical settings when it comes to the Material and Data Library and they are not having this issue. While our set up may not be ideal, it has been working fine for everyone else. I still have a few things to try that I have not tried yet in order to fix this issue. One of which being completely uninstalling Inventor and reinstalling it, but I haven't found the time to do that yet.

@Anonymous Thanks for the suggestion. I will download it and give it a shot.

Hi! You can still have a common library locally. If you use an EDM system like Vault, you could maintain a copy of the library on the server and then ask the user pull down to local drive. Make sure the library is read-only so nobody except admin can modify it.

Many thanks!
