Inventor: Workplane resize/move in assembly behaves differently from part

I just noticed that I am unable to move a work plane created inside of an assembly. I am only able to resize it symmetrically around the position it was created at. Inside of a part I am able to resize a work plan asymmetrically and move it. This is really annoying and seems really weird.

Has it always been like this? Is this a known limitation?

I'm running 2018.3.3 if that makes any difference.

Hello @pball

Thanks for your interesting post.

I have to admit that for a moment a struggled a bit to understand what was wrong there, but it can be easily solved following the instructions on the following technical article:

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/inventor-products/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcartic...

Please let me know if it helps!

Thanks

I already figured that out and that is not the root of what I'm trying to explain. Hopefully a video will show the difference I'm trying to explain.

In the part I'm able to move and resize the work plane. In the assembly moving does not work and the work plane is only resizable symmetrically around the center of the plane.

I see the same thing in 2018 as what you are showing.  However, you can move the origin planes in the assembly (make sure the "Auto-resize" is unchecked).  If your assembly user workplane is based off of the origin workplane and the origin workplane moves, then so will the plane built from it when it is resized.

I can just never get the move icon when trying to move the user defined workplane.

I see the same thing in 2019.2

@Cadmanto
Seems like the consensus from that thread is it is possible to resize assembly work planes with the understanding the center is locked and it cannot be moved as it's centered on the origin work plane. Which follows what I've experienced.

@karthur1

You're seeing what Cadmanto's linked thread says and what I've seen.

To sum things up assembly work planes can be resized but the position is locked to what it was created using. It seems a user from the linked thread did make an Idea post requesting assembly work places to behave like part ones do, so hopefully that could be implemented some day.
