Hi.

Ocasionally, when explorer is showing inventor thumbnails, it just crashes.

Really appreciate you to post this issue to us! I have seen that you use Inventor 2018. Have you installed the latest Update package? Could you have more details about the workflow which cause to crash?

Thanks,
River Cai

I am using version 2018.1.2

I used version 2017.4.2 and the error was the same.

I am in a Windows 10 Pro machine. AMD Rayzen 5 processor, 32 GB RAM.

What kind of aditional information do you need?

Could you have more details about the workflow which causes to crash? If possible, could you submit the error report to us and provide the email address to us? So that we could dig into the details.

Thanks,

Hi. There is no error report generated by Inventor. The error is from
windows explorer. Inventor itself done even need to be opened.

What do you mean with the workflow?

Hi,

I think I have the same problem...

When working with Inventor 2018 I leave some Explorer folders open, usually the folder with the parts of the library and the folders I am currently working on,

With [Alt+Tab] I change the windows and choose in the Explorer the files that I will edit in Inventor.

After some time, sometimes hours, sometimes minutes, Explorer fails to show the part image and only shows the Inventor icon.

The Inventor 2018 continues to work fine, including the "open file", but no other program can open. When you try, a message appears stating "The file name is too large".

I have already reformatted my SSD and installed everything, two or three times.

I"ve already started all a new SSD

I"ve already started all a new computer and with a lot of patience and monitoring We were careful to copy the drawing files, without virus or any file that could interfere and only install Windows 10, office 365 and inventor 2018.

Even so, the bug happens again after a few hours...

This problem appeared em May 2017, as I could not solve it I went back to inventor 2015 and had more problem.

Now in January 2018 I tried again to install inventor 2018 and again the same bug appeared!

Hi! The behavior sounds system related. Could you try cleaning up %temp% and see if it works better?

Many thanks!

Hi! I am not aware of a similar issue on Inventor. It sounds like some shared components are missing from the system. Is it on Windows 10 or Windows 7? Could you try the following?

Go to command prompt and type in "C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor 2018\Bin\Inventor.exe /install" to register Inventor.

Many thanks!

Same error with win7 and Windows 10.
Few people use preview thumbnail on Windows.
Some components installed with 2017 or 2018 version cause issue . I found on Autodesk forum another cause with no resolution. Only suggest nota use thumbnail. I try with new installation with Autodesk and Microso latest service packs

I never got this solved, and Support wasn't good.

Problem remains since I installed Windows 10.

Hi, Macro,

I assume you're able to easily reproduce the problem, and am not sure if you can please record a video for the crash? And it would also be much helpful if a dump file can be created for the Windows Explorer when it crashes with the Windows Task Manager.

Hi,

You can use whatever tool to record the video to show the crash steps/workflows, like a mobile if that works for you.

To generate the dump file, you can firstly start Windows Task Manager by right click on the Windows Task Bar, and then select the Task Manager. Then when Windows Explorer crashes, and if there is any message box/dialog box still running on the screen, don't close it, and switch to the Task Manager, and if you can find the Explorer in the Task Manager, then right click on it, and select the Create dump file. Once the file is created, Windows should prompt you where this file is saved on your disk.

Thanks,

Hi.

But explorer just shutdowns. A video record would be same behaviour as clicking the close (X) button.

Also, since explorer just shuts down, there is no window to create a dump. 😞

Any more ideas?

Hi,

Does that mean, the Windows Explorer disappears from the screen immediately?

Do you still remember if you viewed the files in Details, List, Small Icons, Medium Icons, Large Icons, Extra Large Icons, or other mode that caused the crash? Would the Explorer.exe crash if you view a folder that doesn't contain any Inventor files (*.ipt, *.iam, *.idw, *.dwg)?

Thanks,

Yes. That's what I mean.

It only happens when showing thumbnails (medium / large icons)

Explorer never crashes in folders without inventor files (even if preview is
activated on other file types)
