Inventor 2019.2 Update Error with Copy Design

This morning I installed update 2019.2 on a Windows 10 workstation.

Now my copy design from Vault does not work.

Can anyone else reproduce this or, possibly know the solution?

For now I just uninstalled that update, and it works as normal.

Hello @michaelhahn,

Thanks for reporting back the result, just want to double check with you, do you mean Copy design works well on top of Inventor 2019.2 + Vault 2019 RTM

Thanks for the help in advance!

Sorry I did not uninstall anything on Inventor.  I uninstalled Service Pack Vault Basic 2019.1 and it fixed the issue.

Hi All,

I was able to solve this with the following steps.

  1. Close Vault and Inventor application
  2. Launch InventorView.exe from Inventor\Bin folder as an Administrator
  3. File > Projects > This will show “Register..” dialog.
  4. Choose “Yes”

Hi all,

Please try below steps which solve the copy design issue in one of the reproduced environment.

  1. Close Vault and Inventor application
  2. Launch InventorView.exe from Inventor\Bin folder as an Administrator
  3. File > Projects > This will show “Register..” dialog.
  4. Choose “yes”

Please let me know if it still doesn't solve your case.

Thanks,

Rachel

Correct.  I uninstalled the service pack for Vault client but left the Inventor service pack on and it resolved the issue.

Hi Autodesk,

Can I suggest that all these hopeful fixes are described in detail as not all Inventor user know the whereabouts of  the Inventor/Bin folder nor is there a "Yes" option after step 3 projects.

We all want this sorted but random wording like clear cache and all temp files is too vauge.

Please give very specific instructions.

By the way the suggested neither the Internet explorer clear cache nor the run Inventor View as Admin from bim works on my m/c.

If Autodesk want to remote on to my m/c you are welcome.

Hi @andy-axium,

Much appreciated if you could share me the machine to remote. Could you provide your email address or sent me an email (my email: rachel.li@autodesk.com) that we could discuss for remote details.

Best Regards,

Rachel

@rachel_li@Madhan_T,

I have tried this fix this morning.  InventorView did ask to be reregistered with the operating system, and wanted to "terminate ... processes before continuing with the registration".  I confirmed as you instructed.

Once this was finished, I launched the Vault Basic Client, tested the Copy Design function, and received the same error as originally posted at the top of this thread.  I rebooted the workstation, and still got the error after everything came back up.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Regards,

Eric

What we have found today.

It seems that Inventor 2019.2 changes the styles library. If you are using a shared folder, then you get the error that they are incorrect (like when you tried using  Inventor pro with basic design data).

I wonder whether this is part of the issue?

Any way, it still looks like an uninstall of 2019.2 until Autodesk sort the problem out.

It's a toss up between copy design & a spill chucker??

Hi Dave,

I am not aware of the change to Styles Library. Do you mind starting a new thread describing the issue? Adding to this thread could be confusing.

Many thanks!

Hi Eric,

Could you please try below scenario, and let me know if this scenario will make Copy Design work?

1. Locate to Inventor Bin folder, [install folder]\Autodesk\Inventor2019\Bin, default is C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor 2019\Bin.

2. Run Inventor.exe as administrator.

3. Run InventorView.exe as administrator.

4. Keep Inventor and Inventor View both opened.

5. Launch Vault client, try Copy Design.

Best Regards,

Rachel

Can someone confirm if the latest Vault 2019.1.1 update that was released recently helps resolve the Copy Design issues? That is, does having both Vault 2019.1.1 and Inventor 2019.2 updates installed result in successful Copy Design commands? I know that Vault 2019.1.1 update does not specifically address this Copy Design behavior, but I am curious if simply having this combinations of updates is successful.

Hi,
I install the server and client vault 2019.1.1 and it doesn't solve the problem...

Thanks @SteeveVallieres for giving that a try. I thought it was worth a shot.

Has anyone tried the solutions or something similar to this related forum thread about Copy Design in Vault 2018.3.1/2018.3.2 crashing? It seems there are some big similarities such as the inconsistent behavior between machines, users and files along with Copy Design and Rename crashing Vault client unexpectedly. Some things to note is that some users in that thread have used Autodesk Desktop App to install their updates and are seeing issues after those updates are installed. I would say look at posts 17, 18, 19 and 20 about renaming the workspace and programdata folders.

A few remote sessions were hosted with @eric.roades & these workarounds addressed Copy Design & View in Window not working:

  • Run regedit
  • Create a Registry Key called HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Autodesk\Inventor View
  • Under that, create a String value called Location
  • Set the value of Location to be the path to where the InventorView.exe resides on disk. Eg: Location=C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor 2019\Bin\

Inventor View Registry.PNG

Copy these 11 files from the ...\Autodesk\Inventor 2019\Bin folder to ..\Autodesk\Vault...\Explorer folder :

Inventor2019.2FilesToCopyToVaultExplorerFolder.jpg

Please ensure to backup the entire Explorer folder prior to doing the file copy.

  • Launch InventorView.exe as Administrator.
  • Launch Vault Basic 2019 as Administrator.
  • Copy Design should now work.

The following was needed to get "View In Window" to work:

  • Launch Inventor.exe as an Admin which prompted to Choose “Yes” for re-registration, (may be followed by usual subscription login or other licensing messages).

Once the re-registration is completed, View in Window should work.

Could others with this issue please try these workarounds & report back here ?

Thanks,
Chris

Just tried this out.  It worked for us.  However it won't be something we will push out to all of our department unless it's in some sort of patch more than likely.  running vault basic 2019.1, Inventor 2019.2, windows 7,

I had the location key in my registry but it was set to the path below.  So I just modified the key to the path you gave me and followed the rest of your steps.

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor View 2016\bin\InventorView.exe

This path was (still set at pointing to release 2016) after running inventor 2019 and 2019 view more than once.  2016 probably hasn't been ran on the pc affected for over a year.

Scratching out my post... just realized I tried it on a different machine than the one I thought I was testing on.  The one I tried it on doesn't have 2019.2 inventor update installed.  I will retry and post results tomorrow morning.  Sorry.

OK Thanks Katie,

Note that I just edited my earlier reply below to add in an additional step to copy over some files from Inventor to Vault. This was based on some further testing done today.
