Is it possible to insert a Google maps satelite image (jpg) on 1:1 scale on a part (ground.ipt) to visualize the plant. We design some building, but want to vizualize it on the actual site, so I want to bring those 2 together. Inventor model & satelite image. How to....?

Hi!

Insert the map as a picture. Carry the picture in a sketch.

After carry the image map, you can reescale the map using some references in the map. Apply some dimentions to the image until you have the desired scale. It's a manual process, not automatic, so you will have to play with the dimensions.

Tip: you can use the image ruller to have a reference .

OK thank you, I managed to get the jpg into my model (iam) but it won't display in the drawing (dwg). Any tips...?

This is hard to do.

@johnsonshiue

Unfortunately Autodeks guys did not allow to push images from parts and textures on to drawings in IDW. Pity and disappointment.

Besides be advised that Google has right for those images and they are very strict in perusing those who use them.  Even individual users.

Technically you need to place this image directly in sheet, and than manually align you model view and image on sheet (painful, long and vulnerable process, not worth en effort, but technically possible).

But is far more convenient to do that in PDF after you export your drawing.

Do you export to PDF or some other format?

I found the "decal" command... It worked 🙂

No way?

Does it get on drawings? Really?

Hi Cris,

Yes, the decal and texture do show up in shaded view in idw. But, if the image sketch is not consumed, it will not show up in shaded view. Also, if you export the idw to dwg, shaded views are not shaded.

Many thanks!

@johnsonshiue

Last time I was trying that decal was not exported to PDF.

And I had much of struggle to finally get it there.

Is this now working up to the PDF?

How About textures? Now I think that this may have been a problem, as it had something to do with sheet metal and flat patterns.

I know it was that decal was not available in flat pattern. So I had a jpg in part but was not able to see it on drawing.

Is this fixed yet?

CaseNo:12536208.

You want to be using different software.  Navisworks is exactly this type of tool, you can bring in models from a number of different sources and view them in context with each other.  You can also export Navisworks content to Google Earth files, so you can view them in GE without having to bugger about with draped image files.

Hi Cris,

The issues you are talking about are not related to this particular thread. As of 2019.1 update, the decal in shaded drawing view is indeed properly exported to PDF. I know it was not working before. But, I don't remember the exact timeframe it was fixed (2018.3?).

Many thanks!

I work only with DWG, and it does work... Yes it does work with PDF also. We work with Inventor 2018.
