Importing Text User paramaters from excel

Hi Autodesk/Answer day

When will Inventor be updated so that text can be imported via an excel spreadsheet the same way numbers can be imported?

Currently the only way is to use iLogic and specify an individual cell. This is problematic and time consuming, and I'm confused why text can't be imported using the same way numbers are. Surely this doesn't require a complicated modification to the software?

As far as low  hanging fruit, surely this could be made a priority??

It will benefit sooo many people, being able to control a table driven model's part numbers, colours, descriptions etc etc without having to fiddle around with additional (and totally unnecessary) text import iLogic rules, having to manually create each user parameter in each model/file and having to specify individual cell locations which if you accidentally move, break...

Cheers, looking forward to hearing back!

Paul

Paul,

Currently we don't have that on our immediate priority list. It would be a good candidate to add to the Inventor Ideas list; https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-ideas/idb-p/v1232/tab/most-recent

Depending on what you're trying to achieve you might be able to use the Excel link functionality from the Parameters dialog - that enables you to drive parameters directly from an xlsx file.

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris, yes that's what I'm talking about, using the Excel link from Paramaters dialog.

Numbers come through but text doesn't. It doesn't make sense why text doesn't come through.

One would think that by specifying "text" instead of "mm" or "deg" etc, in column C, that it would then recognize.

It says: "unable to create parameter <my parameter name>", then "unable to parse equation: <my parameter value>. and when I add "text" for the units in the excel sheet "units change for parameter <my parameter name> not allowed"

It already had 38 upvotes before being archived.... 4 years later no resolve.

I believe this is solved in 2024? Haven't done to confirm though as am currently on 2023

Note "text" is now part of units
