Immediately unresolved sketch points

I have a frustrating problem that happens all the time. I'll start a sketch, project a vertex, finish, update the model, and the sketch point immediately becomes unresolved. Consequently, anything I wanted to coincide with the sketch point will not update if the vertex that was originally used to project the point is moved. How is it that it can project the point, but can't maintain the reference? 

 

Before you suggest that it's a result of the mark tool causing a fragile reference, this type of problem occurs on other parts independent of the mark tool. While we're on the subject, why did we make the mark tool only work on solids and not surface bodies? There must be a better solution for dividing up a face without using the split command 500 times. If the split tool could handle multiple cutting tools at once, that would be great.

Missing a lot of files, so the assembly file is uselless...

Anyway, try this:

Place a working point first, then project the working point.
It will be a more robust reference.

Sorry, I attached the assembly when I meant to attach the part. Should be fixed in the original post now. Those are the only two parts that should be needed... there's point clouds and other references that should be fine to remain unresolved. I've recorded a new video to demonstrate my point. Typically, I do like to use work points as an insurance policy for referencing flange termination points etc, because I can ground or redefine the points if something goes sideways. In the video, I show a solid formed by thickening a patch. the solid is marked up to divide up the surface into cells. I can attach the work point to the vertex of one cell. but then I tried offsetting the solid face so I can just get the side I care about as a surface and doing the same thing. Work point will not attach.

I think I'd experience this problem less if I had an easier way to split up a face. I'm not sure. Thanks for looking into this, though.

You can split the face with SPLIT tool or MARK tool.

In my case, both work (if i'm understanding what you need to do)

I'm not suggesting that it fails every single time. I reckon about half the vertices on the face of the part I uploaded are strong enough and half are too fragile to support a point. I can't account for the inconsistency. All I can do is hope that by the time we switch to 2027 that some of these situations will be resolved. I would be elated if the mark tool could mark a surface directly and reduce a layer of abstraction. I believe if we can take the solid out of the equation it would help a lot.

Also... if i export the file as step, when i open it back, you can create the points you need without problems...

So, it's not a problem with the process, is file related: something corrupted, to complex, etc...

Probably this is the way to go: you get the surface from the part, and then you export it (as reference) to keep working on a simple file... it´s not a perfect workflow, but works...

Well... solid is usually more robust then surfaces... i think adding surfaces will increase complexity.

 

Problems will only be resolved if users inform developers about the existence of a bug; otherwise, they won't be able to fix a problem they're unaware of... so my suggestion is to open a support ticket with your problem, in case no one has looked into the situation yet.

 

Give then good information: resume your issue and share some files where the problem can be reproduced.

 

 

 

When the files gain some level of complexity, it can be frustrating to see that some basic tasks start to fail...

Hi! Based on my understanding, the difference between solid bodies and surface bodies is mainly on modeling flexibility, not on robustness. Solid bodies and surface bodies both can have challenging modeling issues.

I took a quick look at the ipt file. The point clouds are missing. As a result, the Work Points are failing. Do you know a way to reproduce the missing point cloud behavior from scratch?

I've been unable to reproduce the issue without at least one level of abstraction through derivation. in some of my projects we'll have a main skeleton, which is derived into multiple files that we edit further, which is then derived into individual parts to use a reference to size our panels. The problem is probably caused or exacerbated by derivation and marking. I don't think marking is as reliable as splitting, but there's just currently no other way to divide a large surface into cells.
