How to display show solid sliced section with mesh in Inventor stress analysis

Dears, 

 

How to display solid sliced section with mesh and results in Inventor stress analysis, it is by default only showing hollow shell model.

 

In Nastran it has been clarified, see thread below. How to do this in Inventor?

In Autodesk Inventor stress analysis, enable section view in Results, activate Slice Graphics, then turn on mesh display under Results options. Adjust clipping plane to visualize internal solid stress distribution with mesh overlay for clearer finite element interpretation. view settings

Where to enable the section view in results? There is no option to enable section in the results, see attached picture below. And if I enable the section view in view menu, the section shows as a hollow shell model.

The basic stress analysis package in Inventor has a few limitations.  Autodesk made a deliberate choice to only display results on the exterior surfaces of components.

 

Workarounds:

  • Use Inventor Nastran
  • Use Fusion
  • Use a 3rd party FEA tool like Ansys.

  • I was using Nastran, but got into another problem in Nastran: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-nastran-forum/nastran-symmetry-constrain/m-p/14174382
    So when I apply a frictionless symmetry that is not in X, Y or Z direction, I have to use a frictionless support.
    Then Nastran creates deformations on an edge with only frictionless constrains, like that edge has a fixed contains.
  • Fusion has been banned for our R&D department, because it is not complete replacement of Inventor.
  • Ansys I was used to work with, also Abaqus, and COMSOL.

So it looks like Autodesk still does not really offer reliable FEA solutions, in the early years we tried Moldflow, that gave terrible erroneous results.
It reminds me also of the days Autodesk came with Mechanical Desktop, that was also destroying the productivity of R&D departments, because it was full of bugs and crashes.

Autodesk FEA might look cheaper in the beginning, but on the long run it comes with too much time consuming issues and limitations that destroys essential R&D productivity!
The responsiveness and active help of the Autodesk helpdesk on technical issues is also very limited, only when they think they can sell licenses they respond.

We are planning renewal of Inventor Professional licenses, and with that were considering to purchase Nastran and Tolerance Designer, and used of both the packages the trial license.

As usability and support is so low priority at Autodesk on these software packages, we chosen to keep Inventor Professional as it is and look for other 3rd party FEA and tolerance design modelling solution, as advised as last option by an AutoDesk Expert Elite Member.
