Change Inventor Default Template

Anonymous

I'm trying to figure out a way to change the default template to one of my own creation. Now, I have a good grasp on the idea of the "Templates" folder and saving templates to there. My question is about a very specific problem: When I click the top-left-hand corner Inventor symbol, click the arrow next to "New," and click "Drawing," it opens up the Standard Inventor drawing template (screenshot attached of what I mean).

When I remove the Standard.idw from the Templates folder and add my own MyTemplate.idw, the same New Drawing procedure described above yields only an error message:
"Standard.dwg is not found."

Is there a way to change the file that this "New" "Drawing" points to?

Thanks!

Simply save MyTemplate as Standard.  If you want to start from idw rather than dwg - change that in Application Options.

Is there a way to change the file that Inventor searches for as opposed to changing the file name?

Nope.  Either name your template "Standard", or click New and select the template you want.  I prefer a combination of the two: we have three drawing templates, and the most commonly used one is named Standard.idw, but I always click on the New icon (or Ctrl-N) and then choose the one I want.

Gosh, perhaps that is something that Autodesk could look into - allowing us to point the template to the file we want.

Hi! I am sorry that I am not sure I understand the request here. You can always select a template (non-Standard) to start a new file. Certain workflows do default to "Standard" templates. Could you elaborate your requirements?

Many thanks!

When one clicks on the quick launch button to create a new drawing, Inventor defaults to opening the filename "standard".  There's no setting to open a different default filename.

One needs to click file->new-> {choose template filename other than standard} in order to create a new file with the desired template.

I am on 2023 and still wondering if this can be done. It's so much faster to just click the quick new drawing and have it bring up the template that I chose to be default. I am only seeing the solution to change my companies default template name to "standard.idw"

Agreed.  I'd prefer my users click on the button and get directed to the templates that I'd like them to use without having to name these templates as "Standard".  This way I can clearly identify which templates are ours, Inventor's or a client's.  Renaming these files messes with that completely.

Anyone has any luck know where the ghost template come from if you click on the top left arrow pull down to select new part or drawing?

See the picture below.

I try to ask the user not to click on that and click on the new then the window template popup but some user has problem follow the instruction so I want to know how to fix this so it always point to my company template.

Thanks

Hi! When there are no Standard template files in the template path, Inventor will generate a file without using a template. All settings will be internal defaults. If you want to avoid creating new files based on internal settings, make sure Standard template files exist in the active template path.

Many thanks!

John,

I have my own template setup and the project mapping correctly to the right template but when some user click on the arrow pull down and click new part they click on the blank template created by Inventor default and I try to tell them not to do this but it happen some time.

Yesterday I try to remove all template off my computer and it still happen. I think Inventor just generated by it self some how and I wonder if Autodesk stop this happening or let us know how to stop it.

This happen with tube & pipe feature. I modifier the T&P Run.iam file in the design style folder and the 1st T&P assembly generated it use the one I have in the folder but after you created the run.iam it use the default template.

I am not sure if there is a right way or Autodesk let us know how to do this the right way.

Thanks

Hi! As long as Standard templates are missing in the template folders, clicking the upper left New button to start a new file will lead to the behavior.

Many thanks!
