Sheet metal flange creates 0.01 mm relief gap

I often have a flat plate that I want to partially extend. To do this I want to use a flange feature with a 0 deg angle because it's a really quick and easy way to do this. However when I do this it creates a relief gap of 0.01 mm even though I have selected the "Tear" bend relief shape.

I know this isn't a practical issue because it's so small, but I find this very annoying. It doesn't give me the exact result I want when measuring or dimensioning. It also gives me issues when creating a pattern of these features, because I always start at the end of the plate so all of the extensions will only have the relief gap on one side. I know I could either use a face feature to add the extension or a cut feature to remove everything but the extension, but this is a lot more work.

I'm pretty sure that this hasn't always been this way, I have some files I created with Inventor 2024 and it didn't show this behavior. I am now using Inventor 2026.

Am I overlooking some setting I must have changed by accident or did the actual behavior of Inventor change? Is there a way to do this using a flange without having the relief gap (and without using something like delete face after the flange to clean it up)?

@johnsonshiue Could you look into this please?

Hi

You are right - it's a bug in the current version.

At this point you can use the Face command instead of the Flange command to get the desired result.

Hi! I could be wrong but I don't think this is a new behavior. Tear relief does require a small gap. Otherwise the folded body cannot be unfolded. Please share the part here. I would like to understand the behavior better.

Many thanks!

I'm getting the same issue. Trying to do a 0 degree bend narrower than the edge it's on and I get these small refliefs. Didn't notice until I tried adding a corner round and it indicated in to the sheet as it was picking up first edge of relief. Setting relief depth to 0 makes no difference and can't set relief width to 0.

Inventor 2025.

Delete face.

Or use the Face command instead of 0.degree flange.

Sure, but previously wasn’t an issue. Added comment so if it’s a bug then perhaps Autodesk might be reminded to do something about it (Your previous comments were last year)

If it’s not a bug then would be great to know there’s a sheetmetal adjustment to remedy.

For a simple flat extension to a face having to do a sketch is defeating the purpose.

IV2020 does not have this issue. I have just checked out.
Here is a file. If you open it up in your version of IV - will the gape appear?

Cheers,

Igor.

Hi Igor,

No it doesn't even if I edit the flange. But if I create a new one it does. I guess that's progress??

Thanks.

Some times Inventor team, in order to program the software to perfection, through the baby with the tub water away.
