Cannot rename files in Design assistant

Hi all,

I need some assistance with the design assistant. I have files which I have exported from a master ipt file.

I would like to rename the master file and assembly files but when I open the files in the design assistant it says the files needs to be updated to the current inventor release, at which point I say okay and presume that the files have now automatically updated.

I cannot click on the action button to allow me to rename the file as it is not giving me the option.

All assistance is appreciated.

Design assistant will not update the files, you'll have to open them in inventor and save them there.

Thanks for the reply, I opened the files in inventor and saved it. Closed the files, opened design assistant and it gave me the same message for the files I just opened and saved.

Hm Niels is right. Normally it should work.
But just to be save you can try another thing.
Do a migration in the Task planer. It normally does nothing else then open and save.
But maybe there is went something wrong during your manually process.

@CWC_Drawing_Office  Check if your application options are set up for migrating on save properly:

(it might be set to not prompt and not save)

@M.Mertens_S&H  also gives a good method of migrating files through the task schedular.

I was not set up for it, I changed it to yes. Reopened the files saved them, closed inventor, reopened design assistant and got the same message.

So The biggest problem I'm having is that I cannot rename the master file?
I rename it via windows and then when I open the assembly I have to point out what is the master file is, I select the renamed master file but it refuses to accept it.

I have the same Problem sometimes. Just click Pass and then replace the file by right click in the Model Browser.

This should work

Am i correct in assuming your Master file is a multi-solid that you used "make components' on?
So you have an .ipt that is derived into multiple part files and those are collected into an assembly again?

If that's the case, can you re-link the individual part files to your renamed master?
Are you getting any error messages?
Manual renaming through windows explorer is a very forceful method for re-linking derived files, so i find it strange that it doesn't work...
Can you share the files? or give steps to recreate your situation?

So I renamed the master file, opened the assembly, skipped the part where it asks me to specify the file.

At which point the assembly opens but the file is unresolved, I try to resolve the file by showing it to the newly renamed master file but it will not accept it. So weird.
Message 11 of 31

You are 100% correct.

So it's not the individual files thats the problem it is the assembly where all the parts have been sent to that isn't linked to the master.

I made a pack n go but I cannot load it onto the forum because theres multiple file formats that the forum doesn't accept.

Will be happy to share via email.

Message 12 of 31

Please disregard the attached files these were the only ones that loaded when I tried uploading the pack n go
Message 13 of 31

You could ZIP the files created by the pack&go, but i'm suspecting you'll need to re-link all the individual files first before opening the assembly.
My reasoning: if you used the method i described in my previous post, the master file is derived into the individual ipt's and not the assembly.
The assembly should keep the link to its files if they aren't renamed.

The assembly definitely keeps it's links to the individual parts, so no issues there.

But I believe the individual parts are losing their link to the master, so If i have 200 parts that have lost the link and I rename the master via windows I will have to relink 200 parts to the newly named master file. That is why I wanted to use design assistant to rename the master but it wont allow me to.
Message 15 of 31

I can understand you don't want to manually link that many files and i do believe this should be possible with the Design Assistant.
I'm not sure what is going on if you resolved the migration issue.
(your image in the opening post showed that the master.ipt needed updating/migration)
What version of Inventor are you using?
In IV2022.1 they added the function to replace the base component for derived parts, which might help in certain cases...

Try posting your pack & go as a .zip if possible, not sure if i can help resolve your issue (nearing end of my workday) but maybe others can jump in and see what might be going on.

Somewhere in your process something is wrong.  Design Assistant will definitely do what you are asking.

Have you opened the assembly and saved/migrated everything in it?  If so, close Inventor, then open the assembly in Design Assistant.  Drill down to find the master file and change the name there.  This should modify the links in all the part files that depend on the master file.

Hi! Please zip up the P&G files and attach it here or send it to  me directly johnson.shiue@autodesk.com. I would like to understand the Design Assistant behavior better.

Many thanks!

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies.

Unfortunately I cannot zip the P&G as I have used a "³" character a few times.
Message 19 of 31

Hmm... that character did not give me issues creating a zip file, but it made me wonder...

Looking at your image, it seems you have quite a few subdirectories.
There might be a slight chance your path has too many characters and that might be interfering.
Can you try moving your files up a few directories and then using design assistant again?

I did all of this and when I still bring the iam. into design assistant it says certain files must be updated. I opened the individual files and updated them all individually and same result.
