BUG - Inventor Causing a Cyclical Dependency by Consuming Sketch

By changing a Contour Flange input to a linked parameter it causes the feature to consume the defining sketch without sharing. This causes a cyclical dependency and corrupts the browser.

I had this happen on another sheet metal master part, but I didn't notice right away and it wasn't until I tried to move the EOP marker that I found out about the cyclical dependency, and even then it wasn't clear what cause it. I ended up losing a lot of work by needing to start over on the features below the problem.

Please fix!

@Xun.Zhang@johnsonshiue

I think I figured it out! It only consumes the sketch incorrectly when the Contour Flange offset direction is flipped!

this has nothing to do with me but jletcher is annoying the sh!t outta me...trying to get this point across is like beating a dead horse! i understood issue after 1st post. IV should not let this process happen because the file becomes unstable. That's all there is to understand...but i dont think im inventoring at jletchers level so i must be missing something.

NOW GOOD DAY TO YOU SIRS

You did not edit the sketch before dragging end of part up, you still have the issues.

@kyled

 I may annoy you but I know what I am talking about.

I understand it from the 1st post as well.

But seem you all don't want to understand Inventor should never have allowed him to do what he is doing.

This is skeleton modeling we invented this back in Inventor 4 we learned from our mistakes I am just trying to pass on that knowledge.

Take it or leave it I am right.

 Not spamming, you said it worked I tested, it does not work you failed to do the same workflow to see the error was still there.

 To fix things you need to do everything the same, you are giving information that is flawed.

You can't do what you are trying, flip the 2 around and you will not have issues.

Why don't you want to listen, is it because of the name?

Here is proof I am right.

delete your contour flange, drag sketch 16 back up.

Now take the end of part drag it up past work plane11 just below sketch 16.

Now make a contour flange using sketch16 like you have been doing but use the 53mm dimension in sketch13 for the width extents.

 You will never get it to fail it will work 100% all the time.

You can hate me all you want but I know my Inventor like no other, I was Autodesk tech guy for years.

Don't let hate blind you.

"You did not edit the sketch before dragging end of part up, you still have the issues."

This should have said "edit the feature" not the sketch.

That will work because even if the feature consumes the sketch it remains above sketch 17 with the projected geometry.

This however is poor master modeling practice because you never want features above your sketches.

Fear not cosmonauts for there is light on the horizon.

 That will not fix your issue.

Your issue is not a share sketch your issue it is a projected geometry then removing the sketch that was used.

Hate to say it but I don't see a fix for that.

Shared sketch does not work with projected geometry it is for features not sketches.

@jletcher

Would you agree that a user should be able to define all of their sketches and work-planes needed for a part before creating any features?

Hi Guys,

I think it is a bug. There could be some intricate reason triggering the error message. But, the behavior is inconsistent. It has been reported as a bug by Xun. It will be investigated further by the team. We will report back with the findings.

Many thanks!
