Autodesk Inventor 2009 has stopped working - Windows 7 64 Bit

I have recently installed Autodesk Inventor Pro 2009 on my new PC running Windows 7 64 Bit. (about 8 weeks ago) Today I received an error message when attempting to run Inventor. The message window said " Autodesk Inventor 2009 has stopped working" then another windows said " A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close that program and notify you if a solution is available"

Here are a few observations that might help:

The program had been working perfectly.

I had Internet Explorer running a YouTube video in the background has I attempted to start Inventor. I feel like a dummy for doing that even though that may not be the cause.

Also; I had one issue that I think was fixed about 3 or 4 days ago with a patch designed to stop Inventor from asking for new activation codes. I have not had this issue again but I will have to wait a while to see if that patch worked for sure but I think it did.

I saw that this error message can be an issue with different Autodesk programs and operating systems so I thought it would be best to start a new post for this.

Thanks in advance,

Bill

The OS is NOT a supported Operating System.

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/inventor-products/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcartic...

You could try running it in compatibility mode but otherwise you will have to downgrade your OS or upgrade your Inventor for proper support.  You will also find that Autodesk does not support more than three versions back from current in a technical support standpoint.

You might also want to check that your Windows version and Inventor version are the same bit type.  You may have put 32 bit Inventor in previously and your new OS may be 64 bit.  That is also something you can look at.

Hi @billjenkins Sorry to hear that, however @mflayler is right. The problem is with the OS compatibility. You would need to have one that is compatible with your Inventor Pro 2009, otherwise the product will keep crashing. Please check the compatible OS here.

Many - Many people run Windows 7 64 Bit Autodesk Inventor Pro 2009. I need someone who is successful running the program using Windows 7 64 Bit.

Please allow those with this specific Windows 7 64 Bit experience to handle this question. I understand that Autodesk will not help with this and I am asking for other help here. I appreciate your understanding and not answering again here. Thanks 🙂

The biggest problem that you are facing, is the need to locate all the Service Pack's and Updates for Inventor 2009 to run on WIndows 7. The ADSK website only goes back to Inventor 2010. I was surprised it went as far back as it does and they only really support the last three versions.

Possibly see in any the people that you know that are using IV2009 have kept any of the SP's and Hotfixes that they downloaded and installed on their machines.

I appreciate that piece of info.

I just reinstalled. The tech who built my new computer installed the program and included Vault. I did not want Vault installed for my personal computer but he did what he thought was right. Until today it was working fine except as mentioned regarding the patch I had to install. I see that this has been an issue with many Autodesk products and not just Inventor. Anyway if some nice person wants to send me a PM with any way to get going; I would really be grateful.

Maybe my new install without Vault will do the trick and of course I'm being optimistic. I will try opening the program in the morning during business hours and call with the new request code for activation again. I was suspect of the patch possibly causing the issue but I don't think that was the cause but who knows.

NOTE: I did try running in all the compatibility modes without success (( before )) the re-install. (I don't understand that either.)

I will update as I go and I do appreciate any hints that anyone may think of.

Update:

I reinstalled the software and I still get the same error message. Now I'm starting to think the patch mentioned in the first post above may be suspect.

I was thinking of using Virtualbox a Virtual Machine software that would allow me to run Vista 64 bit. I know I would lose some performance when using Inventor but it seems that this should work. Any thoughts on this as a possible fix?

Thanks,

Bill

My guess is that you are entirely out of luck and will have a difficult time finding someone with experience who is still running 2009.

A couple of observations.

1. Create a Windows Restore Point when software is running as expected.  (of course, too late for that now)

2. Make sure to download all Service Packs/Hotfixes/Updates. (of course, too late for that now, although you might check http://manage.autodesk.com)

3. What is the source for, "... a patch designed to stop Inventor from asking for new activation codes.)?

Can you give more information about this "patch"?

Hi JD,

Here is the link for the hotfix that I called a patch.

I did the 64 bit hotfix and it did work successfully editing the registry and I ink it solved the re-activation request issue.

Edit: https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/downloads/caas/downloads/content/autodesk-binding-uti...

It may not have anything to do with the issue but thanks for taking a quick look. After installing the hotfix I did use Inventor several times and the new issue started a few days later. I mention it for trouble shooting purposes.

I thought people were successful running Windows 7 64 bit and version 2009 but now I'm not sure after your comments along with the others above. The program was running perfectly for about 8 weeks or so. Also; it ran perfect using my old 32 bit Windows 7.

Do you think running my 2009 version would work properly using Virtualbox and Vista 64 bit?

Thanks,

Bill

JD,

Edit: the above link was fixed and should work now. The title of the hotfix is Autodesk Binding Utility Hotfixes. Jan 07 2015

The link you gave appears to be broken?

Also, it says AutoCAD (don't know if this is relevant since I can't follow the link).

It would not surprise me one bit if users had Inventor 2009 running on Windows 7, but there are other issues that seem to have passed you by in time.

If you are going to try to hold onto an old release you must -

-download the Service Packs/Updates/Hotfixes and keep a backup on removable media.

-keep a backup of the Inventor installer on removable media (in this case it sounds like both 32-bit and 64-bit)

(I am not sure, but I think back then there were different Serial Numbers for 32-bit and 64-bit - I could be wrong on this.)

-keep a backup computer in the closet with original OS for when your computer eventually dies.

So there are several things going on here.

1. It sounds like you do not have a backup of the Service Packs/Updates/Hotfixes and they are no longer available for 2009.

2. It sounds like you went from a 32-bit OS to a 64-bit OS (do you have the installer package for both?).

3. You went from a supported OS to a non-supported OS (this might not be an issue if you had 1 & 2).

If  you do not have the Service Packs/Updates/Hotfixes and 64-bit installer (and SN if different) then I think you are out of luck.

What do you see when you go to http://manage.autodesk.com?

I don't see what this link has to do with your release of Inventor 2009. The binding utility in this link is for Inventor 10 and Inventor 11 which are at least 2-3 releases before your IV2009.

As posted a number of times, you are most likely going to need to track down all the SP's and Updates/Hotfixes for your version of Inventor. The other problem is as Microsoft releases it's updates, they have a tendency to require other people to release updates to work with the changes Microsoft has made.

Hi Blair,

First thanks to you and JD.

I was following the directions exactly by a activation agent and I agree that this hotfix was before my version but this is what they said would fix the re-activation issue where the program would intermittently ask for new activation after the activation was already successful.

I was told on the phone today by the same department in Central America to do another uninstall and then run a MS Fixit utility. Here is the link to the instructions that I plan to follow unless you think different. https://knowledge.autodesk.com/customer-service/installation-activation-licensing/get-ready/remove-p...

My plan is to try this and then my guess is that I will need to attempt to run the program using Virtualbox and Vista 64 bit but from what you are saying that may be a waste of time because I do not have any updates.

Please see my next answer that JD asked for why I have no updates and etc.

Thanks,

Bill

JD,

My 4 disk do say both 32 and 64 bit.

I took an expensive class at a reseller and part of the deal was that I would receive a full version that could not be updated because it is a Not For Resale version. All this time I have been able to run the software perfectly. I started with Vista and later on upgraded to Windows 7 32 bit. Now it was working perfectly using 64 bit until a few days ago. I only use the software as a hobby and it has been very rewarding to bring my wild ideas to life using Inventor. I hope I can find a way to keep using it.

In my management area it only shows free stuff which does not surprise me.

Note: I was also told at the time that I would only be able to receive help via this forum and I have appreciated the times you guys have helped me get past a stumbling block. I have not asked many questions but it has made the difference.

I may have to throw in the towel but what do you think about the Virtualbox Vista 64 Bit idea?

So, you do have both installers.

But you did not download the free Service Packs/Updates/Hotfixes and keep a back-up of these.

Normally a license can be Activated twice and then you have to get Autodesk to reset your account, but because you have an NFR license and an unsupported release....

Fusion 360 is free to hobbyists, it does not have Dynamic Simulation - but I've heard it is the next big thing in the MCAD world!

Hi billjenkins,

Maybe you can find a used XP computer for next to nothing and just use that for your Inventor box and nothing else (keep it off the internet for security reasons).

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,
Curtis

Mark,

Thanks so much for being creative with my issue. I am no more than a student user. I just do an occasional concept project and if successful with my simulation I then upload to YouTube always giving credit to Autodesk Inventor in the description. (for what that's worth - ha) 🙂 I have never attempted to make a profit from my use of the software. My use is totally a learning and experimenting CAD hobby.

At this point I will have to scratch my head on your idea but I do Thank You.
