Is it possible to take a 3D dwg file and import it into Inventor as a solid?

If so how do I do this?

Thank you.

you have to save as a SAT file (export - ACIS) in Acad ,then you can import/open it with inventor.

Simply File>Open type AutoCAD dwg and click Options and then set to Import.
Follow the onscreen wizard.

Select "Import" from the Options button after selecting the DWG file to
open. This was covered here in the past week.

Tried that but it kept crashing. I just wanted to know if there was a different way to do it. I'll try this on my home computer and it probably wont crash.

Will this work if the CAD drawing is an assembly, or will it make it one solid part in inventor?

Thanks for all the info guys. Edited by: Sergio3D on Oct 20, 2009 4:22 PM

While this is a 3D DWG file, it is made up of AutoCAD 3D Faces, not
surfaces or solids. It will not import.

I did not need any other software. Simply opened the dwg in Inventor with the Import Option and stitched the surfaces and promoted the solids. All done in Inventor.

You should be able to open and stitch the file in 2008.

JD,

What Import settings did you use. My 2010 SP1 does not produce a 3D
Model with this file.

I have found that the import wizard is a bit misleading. Solids come in under 3D options, but notice under 2D data there is also reference to 3D sketches. I have found that AutoCAD surfaces of various types will import with settings as attached. Then simply stitch the surfaces in CE.

I saw that, but blew it off. To my understanding a 3D face is not a
wire. I agree, that needs to be explained better. I'll give it a try
again when I have time.

Thanks!

Took the time to give it a try in 2010. Looks like both workflows will
product the same faceted result. The OP now has two ways to translate
these files. IV2008 should be able to do one or both. I don't have 2008
available on the system right now to test it.

Hi! I check the dwg file in AutoCAD. There is no solid in it. It is a bunch of lines forming 3D mesh faces. There is no actual body geometry. You could use the lines as reference to create actual body geometry in Inventor.

Many thanks!
