Running Fusion with Rosetta 2 on Apple ARM-based M1 Chipsets

July 5, 2023 Update

Hello all, the current Insider Build of Fusion now has native Apple Silicon support, and as you read some of the latest comments in this thread, the results are looking great. Our goal is make it available to everyone by our next product update, which should be happening towards the end of the month. If you want to try it now, you can sign up to join our Insider Program, and get access to the Insider Build. Keep in mind that once you become a member, you are under NDA and cannot sharing information publicly, with the exception of this particular project since it is already public knowledge.

Click this link to sign-up and join: https://www.autodesk.com/campaigns/fusion-360/insider-program

Thank you to those you have who've expressed interested and have been testing it! Please continue to let us know about your experiences.

November 23, 2022 Update

As you know we have been working closely with Apple on native support for Fusion on Apple Silicon Chipsets (i.e. M1 & M2). We are pleased to announce that we expect to achieve full native support by Summer of 2023.

As we have explained in this thread, the delay is a result of the need to ensure 100% compatibility between components from over 100 3rd party vendors including Autodesk.

If you want to access this functionality as soon as possible, please consider joining the Insider Program. If you have any questions on the topic please contact @Rajkumar.ilanchelian.

October 28, 2021 Update

Hey all, thanks again for the passionate discussion here. Even though we haven't chimed into this thread as much as we wanted, we are reading every single response and are actively working on getting Fusion to be natively supported on the new Apple chipset. Here's what I know from talking to the development teams:
We are actively working on getting native support. This is still going to take some time because Fusion uses a multitude of services to work the way it does (Autodesk-owned as well as 3rd party) many of which are also not natively supported on M1 chipsets yet. We are collaborating closely with those teams to taking the necessary steps to ensure that the services we use are also natively supported. There is a lot of passion internally to get this done as well, so we definitely feel you. Again, I can't not say when this will happen, but as soon as we have something more concrete to share, we'll be sure to update you all.

April 29, 2021 Update

We've been actively working on resolving the issues mentioned below and are glad to report that these issues no longer exist when running Fusion on the M1 chipset. We are also working closely with Apple and are in the process of certifying Fusion as 100% compatible running on M1 chipsets via Rosetta 2.

In terms of running Fusion natively on the M1 chipset without Rosetta 2, we are still working towards this goal but is going to take some time to reach. We are confident to say that running Fusion on the M1 chipset via Rosetta 2 should be indistinguishable from running it on an Intel-based chipset, if not faster.

If there are specific issues you've experience and are not mentioned below (strike-through items), please chime in and respond to this thread so we are aware and can look into it ASAP. Thank you for your continued support!

Apple's original press release

We are delighted to see Fusion being featured in the most recent Apple ARM-based M1 Macbook Pro announcement. Although Fusion isn’t natively compatible on Apple’s new M1 chipset architecture yet, Rosetta 2 should enable you to run Fusion*. We will be sure to keep you posted on our progress towards support of Apple’s new line of chipsets.

* While much of Fusion 360 works as expected under Rosetta 2, we discovered that some Fusion 360 components were not yet compatible. If you run Fusion 360 using Rosetta 2, you may experience issues in these areas:

·         Switching Team Hubs in the Data Panel

·         Insert from McMaster-Carr

·         Explore Generative Design and Electronics Cooling Simulation results

·         ECAD Tool Libraries and Content Manager

·         Local Simulation Solves utilizing NASTRAN

If you rely on the impacted areas for your work, we recommend you to stay on Intel-based Macs until we have these issues sorted out.

Yes I'm exactly on the same page. I moved from FreeCAD to Fusion to get a "pro" software but i'm really disappointed about it being really buggy in a "not so recent" computer generation.

Message 382 of 444

The Intel Mac version of Fusion 360 isn’t more buggy than the Windows version. I work on three different computers with Fusion 360, one of them is a MacBook Pro.

I use Fusion 360 professionally and privately almost every day across a variety of modeling, assembly and rendering tasks. I can not say that I find it overly buggy compared with  other CAD software I use (SolidWorks and ZW3D).

Yes Intel Mac is fine, I used to have one, but I bought a mbp M2 pro and it's really buggy now !

Message 384 of 444

Can you be more specific and provide examples/data ?

I can not share my project. But i'm working on a project, the camera movement is really smooth no problem, a lot of features are ok. But for exemple when I re-edit a sketch or a flange on a metal sheet, the time to apply the changes is so so long, i can take several minutes on a really simple body.

Message 386 of 444

And it doesn't have that same behavior on an intel based mac, or a Windows machine ?

No id id not notice any problem like this with my mbp 2018. I'm still need to find a windows PC to test. I contacted the support and they are aware of problems with Apple Silicon and he said basically that a version will be available in the summer...

Hi, when is the native support for m2 chips releasing? Is there anyway I can access this functionality?

Message 389 of 444

Full native support by Summer of 2023.

- Time Magazine’s Person of the Year 2006
- Apple M1 Max rMBP A2485 // Latest MacOS // Latest Fusion
- Usually working off files uploaded to Fusion as: Step, STL, SLDPRT. If it matters ask me.

I see this issue has been marked as "resolved" - but Fusion 360 is still a (very laggy) Intel only app, may I suggest unresolving it until either the performance and stability problems are resolved or a proper native ARM (Apple Silicon) build is released?

Alternatively - is there another ticket/thread we can monitor for more frequent updates relating to the ARM release?

Also:

> "Full native support by Summer of 2023."

Summer has been and gone for half the world - is this talking about the EU? Aus? USA?

It is still only Intel based. Will be sometime this Summer before native arm support.

Yes, It is far from “resolved” until it actually is. It crashes on my M2 if I open it up full screen.

I really wish they would get to this instead of releasing these crap updates every month. I joined the insider program, of course can't type publicly what is in there but it doesn't say anything about saying what's not in there. There has not been a thing about this Mac update. Nada. You would think they would want months of feedback.

I have used Fusion for 3 years now. Started on a PC but hate windows. It ran fine on windows IMO. I have a 2022 Mac M1 Max 32 GB ram , basically maxed out laptop. Should run anything perfectly fine. Fusion freezes and auto closes on me daily. It lags , generating is slow, it sucks. Anyone that says otherwise is either using it to draw simple stuff or is lying. I monitor my ram graphics and processor being used. I never get above 25gb ram used, processor never goes above 50% and graphics hardly moves above 15-20% so it's definably not a computer problem. I have no other issues with any other program I run.

I know this doesn't help but I see the same results on my M1 Macbook Pro as well but on my Mac Studio Ultra it actually runs very well but my patience is also running out by the looks of it I don't expect anything until end of summer.

Cool , so just drop $7k on one and it runs great. 😆

@keqingsong Thank you for the November 2022 update! Summer of 2023 is 7 weeks away, and I am an insider program member, but I see no sign of Apple Silicon native support for Fusion 360.

Is Autodesk still planning to release it before Summer 2023 ?

Here's an update I've received during a discussion relating to the Apple Silicon / ARM release -

Dear me Petre, are you still holding water for the dev team, I hope your on the payroll! I have been using my home built rig now for what fees like a year. Running the ultimate cringe Ubuntu + cryinkfly's bottle has seen me through a most enjoyable and seamless fusion experience!

Apple are rich for looks alone and AD has a most diligent group of keyboard warriors at their disposal!
