Want to make slots : trace is not working, slot neither

Hello,

first : how can i find my messages on this forum? I had dashboard in the past, but i can't find it know. Where it is?

 

So i tried to use trace to make slots from a sketch, but it makes only traces, normal maybe, no slots. I changed the bottom height but it does not go deep in the wood. I tried slot, but it wants pockets, and i don't have pockets, only a sketch.  So help would be fine...

If you are using the 2D Trace to follow a sketch line then under the Passes tab there is an option to do multiple depths using the "Axial Offset" facility.

OK, thanks. Let's keep 2D trace for now. So for a depth of 4mm with passes of 0.25, i must have 16 setpdown? I thought it was managing the number of setpdown itself... And what about the bottom height in height tab?

Frets are curved so you need curved cut. Trace strategy will follow straight lines from sketch you using so you need to create extra geometry, or simply use projected strat

What you need to do is a project to surfaces the fret sketches so the sketch is on the surfaces off the guitar part, then use the Project toolpath in the 3D list to cut them this is the 3D traces toolpath (it should be called 3D traces) it does it quite well, have a look in the attached file and look at the height settings I used as well.

16 x 25µm passes? It looks overkill! You must feed fast... You don't mention axial offset?

AFter doing the maths, i found that a pass should be 0.25 mm feeding at 400 mm/mn. 

For my first try, i asked 0.5mm passes at 1000 mm/mn, the O.6 bit broke at once. Funny, but i had only one of these bits.

Edit : on the simulation it does not do 16 passes. Is it normal?

Suggestion, this something I have done in the past, buy a right angle adapter similar to the one in the image and use a Slitting Saw for your slots, it will do a slot in a single pass easily in wood, well worth the cost and the bit of work to adapt, the one I bought years ago isn`t around any more but there are lots of them that can be easliy adapted for the job. I used to do similar small width cuts in Aluminium, work great 🙂

@eric.thepaut3 This is where modeling each feature in is important, you can get away with it if you know-how so if you want to leave the model as is do an offset surface in the surfaces workspaces off - what you want the bottom depth to be then project the sketch onto this surfaces then use the project toolpath (project toolpath + project) to cut it, in a new setup with the surfaces as the model.

This may sound slow but after a dozen or so times this becomes quite fast to do if you remember how to do it properly my bad.

 

In fusion you can use a lot of things in cam from surfaces, sketches, .stl models of the part after the first side has been cut and defeatured models, example attached done properly.

 

It shows a lot of crashes this is because the frets are not modeled in.

Hello Daniel,

i'm back for my slots. I tried to project to surfaces, but i have the same problem than before, "cannot project into the same sketch". So i'm in the frets template sketch, i choose my surface, the fretboard, i have to pick a sketch geometry, and when i click on the first line (fret), i've this error message.  I've seen videos where they do it, but me, i can't. That's why i wanted to use traces. But i prefer the project tool. So how do you proceed? It's a long time i'm trying...

Just Make sure all the settings in the toolpath you are happy with, in the attached file I have set it to cut 1mm axial depth of cut and it does a big silly lead and linking moves.

Modeling the toolpath in is the correct way to do it this is just a cheat.

Many thanks Daniel, i appreciate the video. It's high level for me!!!

But in your file f3d, i disagree. With your settings, you ask for passes of 1mm each, with 3 steps down so you cut 4 mm deep in total. This bit needs passes of 0.25 each, so to have 1.75 mm deep for the fret, it's max stepdown : 0.25, number of steps down : 7 .  I think at least. The simulation is fine. 

 

Last time i tried, i broke 4 bits. I had 5 of them. So only one left.  LOL

 

Tell me if you confirm what i say...

Redo the offset surfaces to the depth you want then you can use what is here to put a formula into the text box for the number of step-downs.

I could not be bothered reading back through your post to find the depth you wanted, lazy yes that's why I called it out so you knew to look.

Thank you Daniel for your help, i could do my fretboard slots without breaking my 0.6 mill.

But about the 3D finish, you seem to use parallel operation pour the radius, i used it also with success. But for my back of neck, i used scallop, and the tool did not go to true depth and now i've got a reverse filet on the neck. I not the first time i'm disappointed by scallop, do you make the back of the neck with parallel? 

Can i do all the finish with parallel?

About simulation, is it possible to see the part after simulation. 

I'll post pics...

The bits the arrows are pointing to select them and delete them, the bits in the circles are part of the problem it is a dirty surface, just deleting the 2 bit the arrow is pointing makes a difference.

 

It is more of a selection issue the tool is going to where it is meant to go, it needs to go past there what is not an easy thing to do.

In the attached file I have given you 3 options I have the center of the tool going to the center of the toolpath edge with the tool outside boundary and the -.01 offset and using the avoid/touch surfaces command to stop the cutting go to places it does not need to go to as the contour toolpath will do it.

 

Just have a look at where I set the toolpath it takes a bit of mucking around to get it correct but this is something all users have to put up with some of the time.
